Reason for visit:
Drove 20 miles here because the number of reviews and star rating were high, so we were curious. I was really hoping for a great experience here, unfortunately it wasn't in par for my expectations. I was in search for a delicious authentic Mexican cuisine restaurant with decent customer service; which Casita Tejas did not truly fulfill.
Food:
To be fair, I have eaten Mexican food in plenty of places so my critiques are in reference to better tasting food, some may find it amazing here, having better, I did not. The food wasn't all too bad, most of it felt under salted, the taste was there, it just needed a bit more salt (something I almost never point out at restaurants). Since it was all under salted I realized that nothing we ate was frozen or prepackaged which meant everything was fresh and made in house and thats a good thing. The environment was busy, about half tables out were occupied. We ordered Queso Fundido which was good, chorizo needed more flavor to really make it a bang for your buck. We had ordered Tacos Apastor and Shrimp Tacos. The Tacos Apastor were one of the better ones I've eaten. There wasn't much pork fat, had good flavor, and the pineapples were sweet and flavorful. It came with rice and beans. The shrimp tacos were decent, nothing special, served with rice and refried beans. The tacos do not come with a side of sauces, you need to ask for them. None of them are remotely spicey or have any type of real flavor. Once again, everything seemed fresh and in-house but, everything was pretty undersalted. Salt brings out flavor in food, it was lacking it in every plate.
Customer Service:
As I arrived, I was greeted afar and was signaled to sit anywhere (which was fine, I wasn't looking for a fine dining experience). Our waiter greeted us very quickly and asked if we wanted anything to drink. I asked for a soda out of habit (fountain drink, not bottled). When I took a look at the menu I saw my favorite Mexican drink so I asked the waiter if he could do me the favor to remove the soda so that I can order that drink. He told me he couldn't do it and I said it was fine. Mind you, I litterally only took a sip, I could understand if I had drank half of it and then asked. I wasn't fine though, he could have easily done me the favor. I could have easily been dishonest and said I didn't like the soda instead I was honest and said I had made a mistake. I was without a single refill for a good 10 minutes.
In conclusion, I won't make that drive a second time, I won't recommend their food, and the waiter could have definitely been more pleasing. His gratuity reflected his customer service skills. Food is over-priced. 55$ for 1 appetizer, 2 orders of tacos, and a soda. They do serve a good amount of food per order, just over priced for the quality. Maybe it has better days but everyday should be the same when running a restaurant when it comes to food...

Read moreMy last night in Homestead after spending three days exploring the local National Parks. Using my personalized algorithm for finding places to eat in new cities, I deduced that I should come here. A nice little American Mexican restaurant near the main downtown area. After luckily stumbling upon a parking spot, I wandered in and got a seat.
I ordered way too much food.
Startedd off with the Mexican Bullets (jalapeno pepper roasted with your choice of tasty chicken, beef and cheese covered with ranchera sauce and Monterey jack). Very good, like an upgraded chili relleno, get this.
Super Nachos (tortilla chips topped with refried beans and ground beef, shredded beef or chicken, topped with melted cheese, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno, and sour cream). Also very good. The topping distribution was on point, the most important part of any nacho dish.
Quesadilla Villa (two large grilled flour tortilla filled with melted Monterey jack cheese, shredded or ground beef or chicken, served with lettuce and with sour cream). I would skip this. Don't get me wrong, it was a perfectly fine quesadilla, but it was boring compared to everything else.
And the main event, the Guadalajara Platter (Mexican crispy cheese chile relleno, a tamal, a chicken enchilada, beef tostada and a beef taco). Sooo good. I love sampler platters. Solid relleno, not-dry tamal, a cheesy enchilada, a crispy tostada, and a taco.
I finished up with an amazing. Quatro Leches (delicious pound cake saturated with a milk mixture, topped with caramel). Tres leches is my favorite dessert of all time. I couldn't figure out what the fourth milk was, but I'm sure it was in there somewhere. So soft and moist, this was the best part of the whole meal, no lie.
Overall, this place is a five start representation of everything you would want in an American Mexican restaurant. I would absolutely...
