Zippy's Dillingham — Restaurant in Honolulu

It's always a hit or miss with this place. But due to my recent visit there, it really changed my perception of that all because of the serivce I got. At any place you go to, service is key to making your experience there a good or bad one. They food may be ok but the service may make up for it. I'll get back to that but let's start with the food. I ordered the Korean chicken as I've done so many of times before, probably all the time to be honest. This is where the hit or miss part comes in because I've ordered this dish many of times before and I would get a different result every time. As you all know each plate you'll get the main entree, a scoop of rice (2 for regular sized plate), and a scoop of mac salad. The one element on this dish that has always been consistent is the mac salad which is always good just nothing special. My main entree of Korean chicken was really good this particular day. The size of the pieces of my chicken were on the bigger size and I received a good amount of it. I've had times were the chicken were no bigger than a size of a Burger King sized chicken nugget which is really small compared to other fast food joints. Now the sauce is what makes this dish standout and it was properly sauced all they way through meaning they must've tossed the chicken around in the sauce a few times using an extra amount of sauce which is the way I like it. The rice is also a crucial part for me. This time it wasn't cooked all the way through which made it a bit mushy. It also was an earlier batch as it wasn't really fresh. I tend not to eat all the rice anyway but this time I only took a few bites and left the rest. Thankfully 2/3 parts of the dish was really good. Now getting back to the service part of it. This dish usally takes longer to prepare than others as they make it fresh to get the skin crispy which it was. When my number was called I walked up to the window and was apologized to as the order wasn't ready. Ok, I don't mind that as I'm not an impatient person. However the second wait time was just as long as when they first called my number so my wait time was essentially doubled. When I got to the window the nice gentlemen with the glasses immediately apologized and offered me a free drink for the wait. I really wasn't expecting anything but an apology that would've sufficed. He insisted so I asked for a small drink and he ended up giving me a large one. Now that my friends is exceptional service. He knew the issue was me waiting a long time and he took initiative to fix it which was offer me free drink. I hope this experience serves as a lesson to everyone as it really goes both ways. I went to Zippys this morning I ordered and waited awhile for my order. I bought two Club Sandwich with French Fries and one Mushroom Burger with French Fries. We got home and had lunch. The two Club Sandwiches was enjoyed by my Mom and Brother. The Mushroom Burger was mine. It was oily the veggies inside was all wilted and the sandwich was cold. The bun was soggy. It looked like it was made much earlier and left till someone ordered it. Me... It seemed strange the sandwich was wrapped two times because it's always wrapped only one time. The first wrapper was soaked with oil. I won't be going back to this Zippys. So far other Zippys always serve fresh food.
