Ordered: Lg Detroit Pep + 1 G-Ma Pep for pickup via website (which itself is provided via Toast), on a Thursday, late afternoon.
The food was amaze-freakin-balls, as the kids say (err, do they say that?)... Best pizza I've had in the relative-vicinity of Westborough (while Hopkinton is technically Middlesex co, it may as well be Worcester, only 15-20min drive from Web'ro). Anyways. The ingredients, the sauce, and the crust come together to produce a finely crafted masterpiece of pizzadom. This dude really put the work in to make something truly special...
Now that said, be prepared to drop some extra bucks for these beauties tho. As seems to be the trend in the food biz lately, customers can either choke down a bit of bitterness on the bill, or take it on their plate instead. But either way, in the end, you get what you pay for; and remember, inflation is up up up...
If you wanna save a few bucks, make sure you order from the BSP website itself, and not through a third-party (Doordash, GrubHub, etc), as those guys will tack their cut right into the menu price, and list it for up to 6 dollars over what BSP actually sells it for.
Also, note that this place is (rightfully) a very popular establishment, and thus GETS CRAZY BUSY DURING PEAK-TIMES/DAYS (esp. lunch/dinner hours, Fri/Sat nights). Keep this in mind when the website offers up its estimated ready-time. If ordering for pickup during dinner hours, I would (personally) recommend adding an extra 20-30 minutes on top of whatever it gives you, unless you wanna sit (maybe) at one of the very few tables available and wait.
This brings us to the service and atmosphere. The staff really are trying to do their best, considering the amount of work coming their way.
Service, overall, might be improved by fine-tuning the order estimator a bit better so that it is capable of better predictions during peak (many customers seem to fail to consider business as a factor, and thus become upset when they have to wait longer than they were initially told). Also an AC inside that building would probably be adored by the staff, and appreciated by waiting customers). It was borderline uncomfortably humid in their when I showed up.
Atmosphere can't really be helped considering the size of the space. The restaurant operation seems to have been intentionally geared towards a pick-up/delivery focus. As previously states, the inside "lobby" area is small, cramped, and has only a few tables, which are generally occupied by waiting customers.
Don't be a jerk and try to sit at one and eat...
TL;DR - fantastic food! Service is good but has room for minor streamlining improvements. Atmosphere is what it is. I will definitely be going back for more of...
Read moreI may have eaten more pizza in more places than anyone alive. I have traveled around the country for work, for speaking engagements and with my daughter on her national AAU team and everywhere I go, I get the best pizza there is in that area according to Yelp.
In addition I watch videos on pizza making, to learn about the best places in the country and about the way things work on the back of the house. As a result, I know my stuff. And I know what's good, bad and great.
I found out about Blue Square from a Phantom Gourmet video and subsequently another video from a pizza marketing source. I was impressed by the owner Troy and his borderline psychotic obsession with making the perfect dough and sauce. He makes a complex sourdough that he uses for all three varieties of his pizza, Detroit style, Grandma style and classic New York style pizza.
Blue Square is a reference to the particular steel pans used to make Detroit Pizza. That's their bread and butter (or sauce). It's a tiny little spot that's set up primarily for takeout. Just five tables. And two of them are being constantly used to assemble boxes, it's hard to keep up with the demand.
We got a small Detroit and a grandma, both with pepperoni. Both were outstanding. The Detroit was as expected. Thick, airy, light, crispy crust. Top quality cheese and THE best, freshest, most simple, yet flavorful sauce I have had. It came out first and was very impressive. A great pizza, particularly if you enjoy that style. What stood out were the bites that had no sauce. Normally this is not something I enjoy. Even good pizzas don't often have crusts that can stand alone as delicious. This sourdough stood alone as an amazing flavor profile.
Then the grandma came out... and my life has changed forever. I had to spend a little while considering this statement to make sure it wasn't the euphoria or recency bias. It's not. The pepperoni grandma pizza at Blue Square is THE best pizza I have ever had. Literal perfection for it's golden brown, incredible crisp and unbelievably flavorful crust to the top shelf cheese combination to the sauce... OMFG that sauce. As simple as it was flavorful... The best I've ever encountered. It's as fresh as it could be and seems as simple as it could be. It was like Troy took fresh San Marzanos and crushed them up, added some olive oil, a little spice and released this masterpiece into the world. Bright, fresh, brassy, incredible. That pizza was a 12 out of 10. I can't imagine a better one exists anywhere. And I've been everywhere. Take the trip, hope there is a seat and understand how special this...
Read moreAfter trying 2 times walking in to get a pizza we finally ordered online. The wait was 90 min each time we tried a walk in. Good for them. Our order said ready on the screen. We waited and waited for someone to help us. 1 kid was on the phone, and then someone started calling names out 10 min later. Then someone went in front of me to order and I got even more upset. I finally had to yell out did you call my name! Yes it's here. 10 min to get an order that said ready. I thought by now things would be running well. You can't eat there because there are 4 tables. You can't take a pizza home in a box if you really know pizza. It will steam the crust and be horrible. We drove down the road and used a table at the pond. We got the NY style and Detroit. The NY was a forgettable pizza. It was paper thin, very little sauce and very little cheese. I do not like a heavy pizza but this takes the cake on a no substance pizza. It was like eating dust. This is not even vaguely close to a NY Pizza! No way in hell is this pizza close to a 7.9 rating per Dave Portnoy. I have been to many of Dave's spots and pretty much always agree with his ratings. Not this time. I would get a Papa Gino's pizza before ordering their NY style pizza. NOW, the Detroit pizza was very good. My family did not like the NY pizza. We have traveled all over the country trying the best pizza available. I get it Dave, your girl is from Hop town. We know good pizza. Antico's of Georgia, Pepe's in CT, Regina's. I don't know if everyone is just ordering a Detroit, but no way was the NY pizza that they made us close to being a good NY style or any style pizza that would crave a return visit. After all the rave I thought this had a good chance of being the one. Although I am now hearing feedback from friend's that tell me it's just ok. They know better than to tell me it's great pizza if it is not. Whoever made this pizza this evening doesn't have a clue. I should have gave a separate review for the Detroit. I am a NY kind of guy. I have only had Detroit twice. It was very good. I won't even talk about value. A family member said it was good when they opened but the people making the pizza's are not there anymore. He too got a bad pizza last time and...
