BRANCHING OUT - "Playing with the Queen of Hearts" DAIRY QUEEN (2405 Campbell Rd)

"You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.'' --Cormac McCarthy

All the construction on the Campbell bridge had me worried about our beloved Dairy Queen so I stopped by yesterday for lunch. There was only one person there besides us. I have been going there since I was a kid cuz it's actually walking distance from my house. Plus, before we got cars, we could beeline from the Northbrook track and play video games and crap while we played hooky. So this DQ has a special place in my heart.

I ordered a Hungr-Buster with Cheese and Jalapenos, Large Fries, a Jalitos Ranch Hungr-Buster with Large Onion Rings, 3 Carolina Reaper Tacos, a Chili Cheese Dog, a Salted Caramel Truffle Blizzard and a Diet Coke (cuz I'm counting calories).

The owner himself, Nasir, was working the line and preparing our feast and everything came out quickly and, what's most importantly, it tasted great and looked like the pictures. That's so awesome. You really knows he cares about the place. You can literally SEE IT with your own two ojos.

If you haven't been by in awhile, PLEASE stop in and support him. He has fully renovated the place and it looks great. That construction isn't his fault. I know the feeling of having a restaurant and you're doing everything right when, all of a sudden, the Big Bad World comes along and kicks you in the nards just because it can and your business gets the shaft. I've been there.

So pretty pretty please go get yourself a Blizzard or twelve this week. You have to approach from the Kempwood end of Campbell because the construction has completely cut him off from the Hammerly end.

Ok. So go get yourself a deep fried burrito, some steak fingers and a brain-freeze. You owe it to...

I haven't been here in a while. They appear to have new ownership. I arrived on a Saturday around 3pm. They were really slow. I saw some new equipment and employees. All employees seem to be teenagers including manager as I could not differentiate. I received no welcome as I entered (nor a thank you as I left ). Employees talked among themselves and sat on top of equipment while on their phone. As I made a move directly in front of a register, an employee stepped up behind the register and greeted me with "how can I help you". I ordered, payed, was handed a receipt and cups. I fixed my drinks and sat down. I took note to how empty the store was and noticed our table area was dirty. After about 5 to 7 minutes a girl with pink hair called out our order items, set a tray on the counter and walked off. After retrieving my order everything was correct. However most everything was cold except the gravy for a chicken basket. The food was about or just below average. It was not gross or horrible, but certainly not memorable. I doubt I return. The store is way off the road and out of the way. While we ate, employees could be heard cursing and playing their own music and throwing things at each other, all while sitting on equipment. We also were treated to some type of criminal customers as they wore ankle monitors. By far not my favorite place or experience. This is just based on a one time visit. Maybe things would be better during a peak period. Or...

I'm giving 2 stars because my food was hot. I had to wait about 20mins, probably because they had to cook my food, which would not have been an issue had someone at least came to the window to greet me and let me know the situation. Instead, they just let me sit outside the window and never opened it. Once I finally got my food, they gave me my blizzard, that was melting already because it was obviously sitting there for a while so my food could cook. I asked the girl to flip it upside down like they are suppose to because she was handing it to me with melted ice cream going all down the side, and it began to slide out of the cup. She tells me she will get me another one instead(which was nice of her), well that took another 15-20mins. It was a blizzard! Another lady brings me my blizzard, and she didn't seem too happy about having to remake it, which worries me so I hope they didn't do anything to it since you can't see through the black drive thru window. She flipped it upside down. Not once did a get a, "Sorry you had to wait." Or anything. Just a very dry, "Have a good night." I drive off to leave thinking, maybe the blizzard took a while because it was packed on the inside, and NOPE, only one guy was waiting...

I visit this specific location any chance I get. This is my childhood Dairy Queen. The couple that own and run this business are onsite daily and love what they do. Over 30 years of Blizzards and Chicken Fried Steak sandwiches. Thank y’all for keeping this location going for so long!
