This is a small hidden mom and pop shop pumping out some great Mexican/texmex fair. The torta was on that classic bread that you love and stuffed with quality toppings, flavorful fajita steak and an awesome sauce that I didn’t notice before I tasted it. We had to try the green enchiladas as they won praise in the early 2000’s. They have a citrus forward verde sauce and topped with lettuce and avocado. Overall I would say they were very good but not the best I have ever had. What moves this to 5 stars is the price. The quality to price is awesome! Clearly it is a local favorite. There is a constant flow of people in and out while you are there. The breakfast menu looks like it may be the strength. Parking is a bit tough and you may need to walk a little.

We were looking for a good Mexican Restaurant for breakfast and this one had great reviews. Went ahead and visited the place. We definitely do not regret going. I ordered a Vampiro drink (I believe that is what it was called) and it was healthy, freshly made, and delicious. My boyfriend ordered green chilaquiles and I ordered the breakfast croissant. Both were exquisite. Our server was amazing and very welcoming. There is a gentleman there taking care of the wait list and of cleaning up, and he too was very welcoming. We are from out of town so we weren’t knowledgeable about the menu, and the employees here were very understanding and answered any of the questions we had. Thank you!

1st visit: Very satisfying. Authentic and true to form. The best Mexican breakfast in Houston. Service prompt and friendly. Casual, unpretentious, and well maintained ambience. Que bueno! 5 stars. 2nd visit two years later.... in keeping with the gentrification of Montrose, they added outside seating to accommodate social distancing and a violinist for ambiance. Unfortunately the taste was bland and far from authentic. I had the not so special “omelette especial” with OJ and my breakfast friend had juevos rancheros. C- at best. Topped it off with a very overpriced almond croissant, all for just under $33.... Been there, done that, no plans to revisit again. 2 stars.

I have been going to Guadalupana for years. Currently I eat breakfast there twice a week - and always order the same thing. I get a coffee and at the end of my meal pour it into a to-go cup to finish drinking on the way to work.

Today, my coffee was not refilled or offered to be refilled once the entire meal - so when I went up to pay I poured the rest of my cup into a to-go cup per usual. The owner, Mr. Diaz, rang me out - and I noticed my bill was $3 higher than any other time (again I eat there twice a week ($25-35 weekly). I showed him the discrepancy and he said it was for my to-go cup. The coffee which I had already paid for - that I myself poured into a to-go cup was an additional $2.99.

I explained I do this EVERY time, twice a week - for several months and have never been charged. He was entirely unapologetic and when I said "I come in twice a week, if you are going to try to make an extra $3 off me for a styrofoam cup I won't be back" his response was "okay, you still pay, thank you" and walked away without resolution.

I can't believe the treatment - especially towards someone who is such a regular patron (they even know my order). I will not be back and will never recommend this place to another...

Out of my nearly 100 Google reviews in Houston, La Guadalupana ranks in the top 2 or 3. I would give it 7 stars if possible. I am writing this after having just had Saturday lunch there. No wait for a table outside on a beautiful day. Immediately attended to by a kind waitress who promptly got our drink orders and chips. I normally go for coffee, but opted for the unique Vampiro juice — perfectly balanced mixture of fruits and veggies. My wife loved her Jamaica aqua fresca. For food, I got the breakfast sandwich, she got the flautas. I cannot recall ever having a better breakfast sandwich in NYC, DC, LA…and I look for these things! Absolutely delicioso. And my wife, who is a Mexican food snob, LOVED the flautas. The family running this place couldn’t be sweeter and I wish all the best for this lovely, phenomenal business. We will be back as much as possible and bringing friends!!

EDIT 1: went back, chilaquiles are also out of this world.

EDIT 2: got the machaca norterna this time — I’ve had the whole breakfast menu. LG...

Background: I went here with a group of 12 people for lunch on a Thursday.

Look and Feel: Simple, hole-in-the wall Mexican food restaurant with attached bakery. Sparsely decorated, but clean.

Food/Drink: The Mexican food is authentic and servings are large. The enchiladas with mole sauce were a hit with my group. The bread and pastries were freshly made and delicious. The chips and salsa were the only disappointment; the chips were nothing special and both salsa options were very spicy.

Price: Nothing on the menu was over $10, so the price is right.

Service: The service was excellent. I thought we might overwhelm the small restaurant with 12 people, but we were seated promptly and food was delivered quickly. The owner even thanked us for our business with 5 complementary desserts.

What to Know: Parking is limited, so at night you may need to park in street parking over a block away.

Overall: Friendly service, great price, tasty and authentic food, but little in the way of ambiance. Good for a casual meal...
