The sauerkraut fish stew - Y’all, don’t sleep on this. I didn’t order it for a really long time because it sounded kind of weird and meh, but when I finally did I discovered my favorite stew of all time. Sooo amazing! Booy, was my first impression wrong. My boyfriend, who tried it with me, described feeling mad cravings for it the following day, and now I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to pass through Mala again without ordering it. Absolute hit!
The assorted sautéed veggies - some of our favorites are the garlic spinach and garlic bok choy. If you think you don’t like veggies, you don’t know what you’re talking about. 😂😂These are so so delicious - we absolutely burn through them, every time.
The vinegar potatoes - I like to ask for mine with both vinegar and spice. Such a lovely, light, flavor! Mala makes some top-notch fluffy rice to pair with their dishes at the table but, as a European immigrant, I still prefer potatoes, so these have been a total delight to me.
Other faves are the spicy beef hot pot, the fish and silken tofu hot pot (I forget the exact name), and the chili oil cucumbers. Boyfriend and I don’t eat pork, so we can’t comment on the dishes that have it, but just about everything we have ever ordered at Mala has been amazing.

Read moreWe visited Mala Sichuan Bistro last night with a friend for a long-overdue catch-up. The experience was a mix of highs and lows, but unfortunately, the lows far outweighed the highs.
Let’s start with the positives—the service was fantastic. Our waitress was handling what seemed like every table in the restaurant, and with a full house, she was impressively efficient and friendly. The ambiance was also great, with a striking mural on the wall and fresh roses and balloons at every table for Valentine’s Day. It set the scene for what we hoped would be an enjoyable evening.
However, the food was a major disappointment. Not more than three minutes after placing our order, everything arrived at the table. That’s never a good sign. It was clear that the dishes had been sitting in a pot rather than being made fresh to order. The result? Completely inedible food.
We started with a chicken soup appetizer, which was forgettable. The shiitake mushrooms with bok choy, pepper chicken, and spicy lamb dish followed, but none of them were enjoyable. The lamb was gristly and unappetizing, and nothing had the bold, complex flavors we expected from a Sichuan restaurant. In the end, we barely touched our food, choosing instead to sit and drink our bottle of wine.
Our friend, who had recommended the place, assured us this was not the norm. But after that experience, we won’t be giving it...
