My previous crawfish experience at Hank's left me discouraged; dreading the end of crawfish season and fearing that the signs were all too obvious. With the discovery of Crawfish House, my hopes were lifted - not only for an enduring crawfish season, but it seems that there is hope for Asian food service as well.
We started with the 20 piece bite-size Vietnamese egg rolls. They use spring roll rice paper which results in a unique, bubbly fried exterior. The egg rolls are cut up into bite size pieces, so even your tamest, white-est homie will feel comfortable eating them. As the rest have said, it's $25 for about 3 pounds of crawfish, 2 corn, 2 red potatoes, and 2 sausage. Using my crawfish-calculator (doesn't everyone have one?), that comes down to about $6.50 to $7 a pound for crawfish, allotting the remainder for sides. What is even better than cheap bugs are tasty bugs. Their "special" seasoning, a.k.a. garlic butter and cajun, was made unique by some secret spice. I think Elaine Y's magical taste buds were right about cumin being in the mix. I love the sultry whisper of cumin in the special seasoning. And no matter what they say, size DOES matter. Large and extra large crawfish were abundant in our batch. This is just about the only time you should have a Size Contest at the dinner table. For $30 you can get the same weight in blue crabs and crawfish with the sides of corn, potato, and sausage. These aren't the same blue crabs that you find out behind Viet Hoa on trash pick-up day. The lady crabs were heavily filled with roe and tomalley (the buttery, yellow hepatopancreas, commonly mistaken as fat). The corn and potatoes were good, but the sausage may have been Eckrich brand and possibly purchased from a 99¢ store. I have a soft spot for cheap sausage-like products, however, my friends at the table did not.
The service was outstanding for most of my group. Our waitress brought two beers on the house and continued bringing out cans of Coke. I would have liked to accredit the great service to my group's jovial aura... except one of my buddies kept getting sheisted on his bottled water. As we were basking in beverage glory, basically showering ourselves in free drinks, my friend sat there with his sad bottle of water... rationing each sip like a peasant because it was obvious that they wouldn't bring another. Somehow we received more joy than grief from this spectacle - one more star for you Crawfish House.
I gladly welcome Crawfish House to occupy Que Hong's old spot. Hopefully they make it through the Great Crawfish Depression that occurs every year from July to February. With food and service this good, I may come out of my shell and try the rest of their menu... shell.... crawfish shell... I want crawfish.
I'm hopeless. See you next year...
Read moreHorrible customer service!!! I called in to order a lot of food to go. First she mixed up the names of what the food is called (She didn’t even know what was in the house special fried rice & fried oysters - she kept calling them “calamari”) then hung up before I could even finish the order & give her my name for the order since it’s a large order. It took her a few mins to know what the fried oysters is called there. About 30 mins later (after I called in), my husband came to pick up the order since I’m w. my baby at home & can’t go, the order wasn’t there. He Confirmed the order & asked why It wasn’t there, then the girl, Hanh said that someone picked it up already. He waited at least 15 mins. However she got the name of the other order but not me due to cutting my call off 3/4 of the way through. She blamed my husband at first then when the boss try to see what’s going on (confirmed that she’s wrong after trying to back that girl up), she blamed the customer whom order after me. She knows their name but never got my name for the order. Never confirm the orders with each customers. I called back to ask her for an explanation. She kept blaming my husband & the other customer then hung up. The food isn’t too bad so we wanted to reorder since I was craving for some crawfish but not after this. Horrible horrible customer service! Not...
Read moreThe atmosphere here is lively, and it's clear that the restaurant is quite popular, especially during dinner time when most of the seats were filled. A friend suggested I try the Mexican beer, but I have to admit it wasn't to my taste; its sour and spicy flavor reminded me a bit of garlic chili sauce, which wasn't exactly what I was hoping for.
The main focus of the menu is seafood, and I found the oysters to be the highlight of my meal—fresh and brimming with flavor. Additionally, some of the other seafood options, like the snails, were incredibly tasty and showcased the freshness that the restaurant prides itself on. The texture and quality of the seafood were impressive, making it a delight to eat.
However, I must say that some of the other dishes didn't quite wow me as much. While they were decent, they lacked the standout quality I was expecting. I did hear that the restaurant has been running some promotions recently, which might explain the bustling crowd and energetic vibe.
For those who love seafood, this place is definitely worth considering, especially if you're a fan of flavors that lean towards Southeast Asian cuisine. The emphasis on sour and spicy notes may appeal to adventurous eaters looking for something different. Overall, it was a good experience, and I would recommend giving it a try if you're in the mood...
