Okay. Where to begin?
Boyfriend, and I walked into Polonia expecting a family restaurant/bistro informal dining. I was in an everyday kilt, he in sweats.
This is definitely more of a European business casual. Nice trousers/kilt, pressed shirt, and Oxford type place here. The dark wood, and Polish television sends a message that this is a dining establishment...not a quick bite to eat. Our apologies to our hosts.
The service was impeccable. She helped us with the consonant clusters in Polish, and introduced us to different foods whilst taking allergies into account.
Appetiser: We got the beet salad. It was delicious. The cheese is impeccable, and the olives set it off perfectly. I am pretty sure that it is fresh beet, but if I be mistaken, I really would not care. It was truly impressive. I have a new favourite appetiser for any restaurant.
Pierogi: Try the mixed batch for the first time. I preferred the sauerkraut whilst boyfriend preferred the spinach. All are delicious.
Veal: Boyfriend is vegetarian, and allergic to red meat, so this was obviously all mine. The veal was tender even for veal. The gravy was heavy without being too thick — it was more a sauce as opposed to the thick paste of Southern cooking...no offence to my Southern family —, and it pairs with the mashed potatoes well. I know, gravy and mashed potatoes...surprise. The cucumber salad has a tang to it which brings the savouriness of the veal to the forefront. The vegetable salad has a coleslaw type tang. I do not like coleslaw, but many do.
Drinks: Krupnik was as if mead were a liqueur. The spices, and the honey pull together to sandwich vodka’s medical taste to a resolving finish.
For the animal-eaters such as me, I recommend using the small ramekin (top left of the plate) for one’s bread. Yes, it is lard. Have a little smear, and put some salt on it. It sounds gross, but it is filling, tasty, and beautiful. Try just one slice.
Overall, definitely stop here for a classic, but innovative meal that evokes a good date. This is our new special...
Read moreAbsolutely delicious! My boyfriend and I love trying out new places ( expecially food from other countries!). It was obvious we'd never tried Polish food before, but the gentleman there gave us the most beautiful Polish experience. He brought us some drinks he made from grass vodka, apple juice, lime and mint. It was like a Polish monitor, but the apple twist was amazing! Then, we tried some pancakes as an appetizer. The apple topping was surprisingly good. I never thought I'd eat apple with potato, but I promise it's so tasty. Then of course he created a little combination plate with a cabbage roll, sausage, baked pork, and various pierogi's ( meat, potato and cheese, and saurekraut and mushroom) . Everything was so good. The pork with the beet sauce adds a unique flavor. Probably because I'm not usually a beet person, but this sauce is really great. The dish also came with a Polish honey mustard. I didn't like it, but my boyfriend did. I think it's because the honey mustard had a Wasabi taste to it. Finally, the gentleman brought us cake ( even though they were closed!) So, I have nothing but high praises for the food and...
Read moreThis is one those hidden gems I love finding! Before dining at Polonia's I took a peek at the reviews here, so I already had a good idea of some of the great food served. But, I have to admit, when I first pulled into the parking lot and saw the building I was a little nervous. With plywood nailed up on part of the front, it kind of had that "hole in the wall" vibe going on. As soon as I walked in, however, I immediately felt at ease in my decision to come here. The place is great!
If you want a nice truly authentic Polish/Czech experience, this place is a must. Parking was easy. Place was cleanly. Staff was friendly and treated us like part of the family, despite all the questions we had!
We came as a group for our monthly food club outing. First time to try out a Polish restaurant for a few of us. We ordered a combination platter as well as some world renowned blood sausage and carpaccio. Everything I tasted across my pallet was nothing short of exquisite. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the...
