Ok BBQ. The hype is greater than the food.
Pros: Burgers, Pulled Pork, Ribs
Cons: BBQ Sauce, Beef Cheek, Beef Rib, Limited availability of beef brisket.
Boomin' BBQ is working hard at bringing Texas style BBQ to MN. I first heard about it through a friend. Needless to say when he told me they were serving Texas Style BBQ and Beef Rib, I was excited and couldn't wait to try it.
I got there early which is something I recommend everyone do to ensure they get what they came for. They frequently sell out of beef brisket within an hour or so which oddly they only sell on Saturdays & Sundays.
I ordered the beef rib, pork ribs, beef cheek, pulled pork and mac & cheese. The food overall was pleasant. I wasn't blown away by any of it but it is a step above some MN BBQ joints.
The much hyped beef cheek was really salty.
The beef rib is Ok but at times seemed overly salty, tough in places and not that great. Having had Franklin's & Terry Black's beef rib, it's hard to eat anything else.
The ribs were decent by themselves but I didn't care for any of their BBQ sauces so I ate the ribs plain.
The pulled pork is Ok as is the mac & cheese.
Overall is good BBQ but not great BBQ. I live directly 20 minutes west of this establishment and it's not good enough for me to make the drive.
Fortunately there is a little gem of a BBQ join in North Minneapolis (The Firebox Deli) I frequent to not only get my rib fix but my beef brisket fix. Their sauce is light years better as well.
Bottom line: Boomin' BBQ is good Texas Style BBQ but some might find it hit or miss.
Having visited on 4 separate occasions, I can safely say it's not the BBQ...
Read moreInside of the Nova Bar, Boomin BBQ was highly recommended by a friend who ate at their former MPLS location. I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of Texas style BBQ, so I ordered with low expectations.
Was hoping to get the brisket (not available), but settled for pork rib tips and a side of slaw. To say the rib tips were the best I ever had would be an understatement. Super moist, plump, perfectly seasoned, and tender. The accompanying sauce was a light tomato/vinegar "meh" but it didn't matter because the rib tips held their own.
Sides of perfectly pickled veggies and toast were a great accompaniment. However, the slaw was a complete miss. Watered down mayo-based dressing and copious amounts of black pepper made it a one-note side.
The real disappointment is the location. Seeing past photos of Boomin BBQ in it's MPLS food truck days conjured communal vibes, throngs of people dining at picnic tables and enjoying the weather - a real option at a location so close to the riverfront. Instead, Boomin is relegated to a tiny hole in the back of a "poser" bar whose staff cares more about taking Instagram photos than helping customers.
In short, the food is great, but...
Read moreBest ribs I've had since I went to Pecan Lodge in Dallas, TX, a few years back. I ordered some takeout in person tonight. I got the 1/2 lb of pork ribs and brought them home. They were amazing! I couldn't eat them fast enough. I would have got the waygu beef rib, but I didn't want to spend $50 on food tonight. Honestly, this is the best BBQ I've ever had in the Midwest. Nothing in the Twin Cities metro comes close to it, in my opinion. The flavor was there. They weren't overcooked and dry, but actually, juicy af. They were so tender that I was able to pull out the bones. You can tell they were smoked correctly. If you get the chance to go here, do it. Thank you, Boomin BBQ....
