My dad spent a good part of his childhood in Huntington. I remember once when I was much younger than I am now, on a weekend trip we went to Stewarts for hot dogs while on a trip to Huntington. That had to be more decades back than I care to remember/admit to. I have vague remembrances of that visit, but mostly the color orange and that it was one killer dog.
Fast forward several/many decades to a few weeks ago when my wife and I decided to get out of Louisville for a weekend. At about a 3 hour drive, Huntington is well within the "weekend away" category. I haven't been there since I was in Jr. High School (still several/many decades ago) and it'd be a chance to get in touch with my Dad's childhood.
As we were looking into places to go my very first thought/recommendation/requirement was Stewart's. That's the only thing I wanted to have on the list.
Wifey was, like, "What's Stewarts?" I was, like, "You know how much we love Tony Packo's?" Wifey was, like 'Yea, but that's way too long of a drive." I was, like, "Don't worry, you'll love it just as much.".
And so it was we made our way to Stewarts for lunch.
When we pulled into the parking lot my memory said "YES! This is it!". Given the amount of time that had passed since my last visit I thought I remembered it being much larger, but BAM there was the orange that I associated w/Stewart's.
We parked on the back side and it wasn't long before our server came up to take our orders. I am not a fan of eating in the car and while they've got some outdoor seating up front, sometimes you have to go for the whole experience.
I had a couple jalapeño dogs and fries, my wife a couple regular dogs and onion rings. And that root beer. MAN is that stuff good! I loved EVERY bite, and having been so long since I'd eaten here made it even better.
Our server did a great job of taking care of us and helping us select the merchandise we wanted to order. I couldn't go to Stewart's and NOT get a baseball cap for my Dad, and I also had to get a tee-shirt.
Stewarts must be doing right, since it's been around since my dad was a kid. It's not fancy. It's not trendy. It's simple food based on ages-old recipes that doesn't over-complicate things. If we get back to Huntington this will absolutely be one of the...
Read more92 years, this great hot dog and root beer place has been here!! I can now say they have the best hot dogs in the area after coming here a few times. And, of course, Stewart's root beer is my personal favorite. It's not too creamy and has just the right amount of root beer flavor. It's not "biting" like some root beers. Sooooo good!!! This is a great little hot dog and root beer place with car hop service. Friendly car hops and quick service on all sorts of chili with slaw dogs, hamburgers, chicken, fries, etc. Good prices, too. I tried the doggage with their chili/onion sauce. The three-pack was very good! Came with a good bunch of fries. You know, it was kinda like going back in time to when I was a kid. I loved Stewart's root beer then, and I still love it now, decades later. Come and try this wonderful food and soda restaurant. You'll be glad you did. I'll be stopping here whenever I drive a rideshare into the area. I love it!
8/9/24: Stopped again for lunch and had three Sauce 'n Slaw dogs, and of course a diet root beer. Gosh, they are soooo good!! As before, the service was friendly and fast by Silas. He's a blast, and I got a kick out of him needling his coworkers in a real funny way. It was like a little comedy show during lunch! Keep up the great work, Silas. Prices are still good. Folks, as far as tasty doggage goes....these hot dogs are delicious, and they're Charlie, the...
Read moreToday my brother and I had a late lunch or early dinner at Stewart's Hot Dogs in Huntington. Neither of us had eat here for awhile and we were both craving a really good hot dog... Unfortunately it was not satisfied here!!! We pulled up and it was about 430pm and they were not busy for a Friday evening. The carhop waitress came immediately. We ordered 4 Hot Dogs with Chili Slaw and onion, 2 Root Beers and she told us 2 Fries were complimentary on Fridays with our order She brought food quickly and put tray on our window. It's been awhile for me and the whole carhop atmosphere...I liked that!! Our Root Beers we're great, they were 5 stars but that's where it went down hill.. $20 for 4 Hot dogs, 2 Root Beers and 2 free fries...that's with taxes and $5 tip.. that's a little steep for me!!! The Weiner is placed on top of toppings, naw don't like that. Slaw was adequate sweet but slightly bitter, not very fresh. Weiner thin but okay, nothing major, but the sauce aka chili was meatless and bland, tasted like it's out of a can..not impressed...tasted like Vietti brand can chili... I hope you like it better than me..I doubt if I go back and I can't really recommend it either...just not my favorite Hot Dog so the search is...
