Glory, glory, hallelujah!! This place rocks!!
Okay, first: I don't know if this is "authentic" NY style pizza. I've had pizza in NYC and this seems like that to me, but I'm no expert and I honestly don't care one way or another.
Second: I think of pizza as akin to barbeque -- everyone has very different opinions of what makes the food "great," and if you don't like this style of pizza...well, that's gonna be a problem for you.
But for me, I can finally say I've found pizza in Huntsville that I genuinely love.
Did you ever beg your parents to take you to Chuck E Cheese as a kid so you could play games and eat pizza with your friends? That pizza tasted like the best ever back then, though I doubt that was a perspective rooted in reality.
But the pizza here captured that ooey gooey cheesy wonderful nostalgia I have, and it made me super happy.
This newish restaurant is in the old space of Taqueria El Palomino. It shares a shopping center with MK Wings off Jordan Lane. The parking lot is small and needs repaving, and the word about this place has clearly gotten out so it's likely crowded. It's worth it.
The inside is sort of hole-in-the-wall Italian -- nothing fancy, checkered tablecloths, lots of seating -- but they do have the distinction of being one of the only spots in Huntsville to offer slices of pizza instead of whole pies.
The restaurant is owned and operated by a family from Guatemala who grew up in NYC. Some of the staff don't speak a tooooon of English, but everyone I encountered was very friendly and welcoming and worked hard to make sure I got what I wanted.
They have a fairly large menu with other Italian options like calzones, too. But I was here for pizza and it didn't disappoint!
I ordered a slice of pepperoni, a slice of cheese, and a Coke, and had a delicious, fast, filling lunch for pretty much right at $10. The pizza slices were huge and hot. The crust is thin and crispy but maintains some nice chew instead of becoming crackery. There's ample cheese and fairly minimal sauce -- my preference -- and if you really wanted to, you could probably fold one of the slices, haha. I actually liked the cheese pizza better, as the pepperoni was a little greasy (unsurprising, and nothing a quick dab with a napkin couldn't fix), but both were outstanding.
So excited to finally have a pizza place I'll agree to go to when everyone else is craving pizza....
Read moreI went to this pizza parlor today and was truly flabbergasted. I have frequented this establishment on several occasions but this was the first time that I wasn’t in my work uniform or daily attire. On this particular visit I had on my lawn care attire. I arrived to MOZZA pizza and the female at the front counter refused to acknowledge me. I waited for a few minutes and still nothing. The restaurant wasn’t busy and there were no other customers at the counter. She still refused to acknowledge me even after a coworker said hey there’s a guest at the counter. Now mind you I’m standing directly in front of her the entire time. So finally the owner comes out and he’s normally the person I deal with. He’s very nice as usual but, he didn’t correct the situation. He says I apologize but she is a sever and my response is, so servers don’t greet customers any more when they are standing behind the cash register at the front counter? He really tried to diffuse the situation but I was already irritated by that point. The level of disrespect had already reared its head and I did not approve of the customer service I was receiving at the present time. As a man that has given the majority of his young adult life serving the country for 27 years in the active ARMY, I would hope that this is not the norm in todays society but sadly it seems to be. We as people. still judge a person by their outward appearance and we allow that to dictate the way we interact with them. I will admit I said some things to the manager that could’ve offended him as well, but I feel like you as the owner, should handle every situation accordingly.. Your employees are a direct reflection of the command climate that you set. It doesn’t matter how she’s treats everyone else, it mattered how she treated me today. The fact that she refused to acknowledge me and take my order is sad. Past actions don’t excuse current actions. Then for the staff to begin insulting me in Spanish was even worse. It pays to be bilingual sometimes. In the I would like to thank MOZZA pizza for showing me what they truly think of me...
Read moreNot authentic NY food!!!! The menu says a cheese calzone is made with mozzarella and ricotta. What I received wasn't. This happened previously and when I pointed it out the co-owner fixed it immediately. This next time I went and ordered another cheese calzone i even asked and paid for extra calzone. This time a different owner claimed that the invisible ricotta was somwhere in the calzone and I should have been charged $5.00 for the extra ricotta. I am born and raised in NY. I know 1st hand what a cheese calzone should look like if you claim to serve authentic NY Pizza.... and you should be able to see the ricotta not imagine it's existence.... I have patronized this establishment over a dozen times, but no more..... customer service and customer experience should mean something as much as we are charged for eating out......so you should be able to see the ricotta in a $10 calzone!!!!!!
August 27, 2024 In reference to your response... I didn't want extra Ricotta. I just wanted to see some Ricotta in the calzone. Which is what an authentic NY Calzone has!!!
The explanation the 1st time..... ....from a manager was that you mix the mozzarella and ricotta before you put it in the oven so it can't be seen. So, you remade the calzone so I could see it, "with what you called extra ricotta!!!" Thank you, to the first manager!!! GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
The second time I went back I was told by a different manager I had been charged $1 for extra ricotta that again couldn't be seen. He then told me it would be an additional $5 to make it like an authentic NY Calzone so the ricotta could be seen.... I then requested my money be returned.... to the second manager...POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!
If you don't believe me check it out yourself..... if you've ever had an authentic NY Cheese Calzone....what they're dishing up, "ain't it"!!!
I'm a fair person though, the extra large pizza and Sicilians are on point....but with this kind of inconsistent customer...
