August 31st, my husband and I stopped in for lunch. I ordered a cheesesteak sub, and a small Spring Mix Caprese salad to take home for dinner later that evening. This was our 5th visit to the restaurant. I have had food allergies for most of my 60-years: nuts, seeds, spices, and chocolate being the most dangerous. I read menus very carefully, in addition to going to specific websites before I visit a restaurant.//During my 1st visit, I ordered angel hair pasta w/meatballs. I told the server that I was allergic to nuts and sesame seeds, although I wouldn't expect either to ever show up in my pasta. I did not eat the oil that was served with the bread; our server was too inattentive for me to ask if it had pinenuts in it.//Our 2nd visit, I ordered the large Spring Mix Caprese salad; I told our server that I was extremely allergic to nuts - she told me that the Caprese Salad did not contain nuts.//On August 31st, we ordered from the lunch menu. I went into the restaurant knowing what I was going to order. I did not tell the server that I was allergic to nuts because I had the Caprese salad from Tortora's a few weeks prior and knew it did not contain nuts. Except this time, mine did. The very last bite had a piece of walnut hidden underneath the spring mix. Unfortunately I ingested most of the walnut piece, but managed to save a hard sliver that I bit down on (which I took with me to the hospital.) Since I'm writing a negative review, I will add that my salad did NOT have the basil or olives; it had 2 cherry tomatoes, 2 very small pieces of buffalo mozzarella, a copious amount of salad, along with the walnut piece. I specifically order that salad when I go out because of the basil, mozzarella, and olives.//I didn't start eating the salad until 9:30 PM. I encountered the walnut at 9:54. I called 911 at 9:56 PM. My husband and I spent ~five-hours in the ER.//Sept 1, I called and spoke to general manager Diana Black for 10-mins and explained what happened the night prior. She did not inquire as to my well-being, she did not apologize, she did not express concern: she crassly berated me for not telling the server that I was allergic to nuts. I told her that regardless of my lapse, I would expect any restaurant to isolate allergens in storage and prep areas, and to protect allergen free foods, such as the spring mix. Clearly, the container of walnuts was kept close to the container of spring mix, which is unacceptable.//The GM said that she wld text the owner, Joe Moore, as I asked that he return my phone call. Her demeanor during the entire conversation was rude. I went in a few days later and took pictures of all of their menus. I had to ask Ms. Black for the lunch menu. She was as rude in person as she was on the phone; I did not introduce myself, and there was only one customer eating in the restaurant, so it was not a harried time period.//It is September 30 and I have yet to hear from the owner.//There was a breakdown in acceptable processes by both parties: I assumed that because my first Caprese salad contained no nuts, that the next Caprese salad would be nut free also. The proprietor and his staff failed to isolate an allergen (walnuts) in their prep areas, and to protect an allergen free food (salad.)//Aside from the fact that I could have died from anaphylactic shock, what has been gnawing at me for the past month is the callousness of the GM, and the fact that the owner (who purports to be a component of the Hampton Cove community,) expressed no concern for my well-being. He never returned my phone call, which speaks volumes about his character. Epic fail by the owner and his next-in-line, the general manager.
Some of the tenets of good customer service: *Apologize *Accept responsibility *Express genuine concern *Make changes to procedures so that it doesn't happen again *Make the...
Read more3.5 star. I've been here a few times over the years and it's the same thing each time, decent food but kinda steep prices. The gluten free pizza is a more expensive choice, but my complaint was, the charges for adding toppings are fine as long as you get a decent amount of those toppings. It looked like they took 1 slice of ham for the whole 10" pizza. I had to break up jalapeños to get some on each piece. And the spinach we paid for seemed to only be on one side as well. Also the cherry tomatoes were still cold!!! Not going to say Domino's is better quality, but you get more bang for your buck; the one in Hampton Cove will load the heck outta that gluten free Pacific Veggie. Tortoras IS better than Earth and Stone Wood Fired Pizza though; E & S is very skimpy on toppings (at least the one near Campus 805 was, their pizza was just as costly or even more so and had way less toppings that I paid extra for. It was sad.) Also at Tortoras, my husband's calzone was 65% bread. He had one little scoop of bacon/pepperoni and cheese inside. This is kind of typical for calzones, but just fyi, don't expect fuller ones here. The cheesy bread was also very bready and not so cheesy...very thin layer of cheese. But the bread was decent quality. All in all the food tastes good/seasoned well/good quality... but you've got to know what you're in for with their pricing. We will be back but probably in another year or so! Domino's has been awful about answering the phone so we headed here for a pizza craving. Tortoras quality/seasonings are better but not worth the cost difference for me. I think it was $5-7 more per a 10" gluten free pizza (how I order toppings). So not awful, but that adds...
Read moreI am from an area with several "real Italian" family owned restaurants, so my comparison is based off of that. This was my first time visiting and brought an out of town guest with me. Went on a Friday evening around 6pm. Seated right away but the place was very cold with multiple fans overhead making it too cold to sit and eat. So we decided to order "to go" and sit at the bar and waited. We ordered pasta, pizza and side salad. 35 minutes later we got our order. VERY DISAPPOINTED WHEN WE OPENED OUR ORDER. Salad was in a small container the size of a Big Mac container. Paid over $6 for it. Ridiculous for what we received! Pasta was good, not great. We were told it came with a side of bread and found it laughable....it was just a bit bigger than a tortilla chip. It was foccia bread which had all kinds of spices in it that clashed with the pasta.. frankly it was not good Pizza was decent ... Asked for hamburger on it. We were able to watch the guys making the pizza as we sat at the bar and they do not even take a handful of any ingredient to put on it. IT was scarce. We will not go back. If you are looking for a place where you can sit and talk and enjoy the company you are sitting with, don't go here. More like a sports bar with 4 giant TVS scattered all over the restaurant....ambiance is cold, dark, metal, harsh, and loud. Food was decent 3.5/5 .... Just was hoping for more for the money Overall, pretty Disappointed. I have a one star for service because the 2 people we encountered when we first walked in did not even greet us except to...
