To be honest, we were planning on going to another breakfast joint today. My husband and I woke up a little later than planned. Due to our time restraint we decided just to eat in our area. Breakfast was in our minds so Black Bear is where we hit up today.
We came towards lunch time so this joint was busy. We got sat right away and got our drinks started while we looked over the menu. A full mug of hot coffee and a cold apple juice was dropped off while we breezed over our options. I appreciate that these folks offer 3 different flavors of creamer. It's nice to have something besides vanilla.
We wanted a little of everything. I just wanted eggs and sausage but my husband wanted pancakes, biscuits and gravy and only 1 egg. The 1 egg is humorous to me. Black Bear does have a "smaller" portion section on their menu so we ordered off of that. The volcano breakfast and the biscuits and gravy with a side of 2 fried eggs.
For a smaller portion, these folks didn't disappoint. The biscuits looked hearty, nicely covered in gravy. The pancakes were perfectly sized and you get 2 of them. My husband smothered one pancake in butter and syrup and polished it off. He ate the egg and biscuits and gravy. I enjoyed my two fried eggs and sausages. I love the sausages here, especially when it's dipped in the pancake syrup. It's the best combo of sweet and savory. With both meals combined and the extra side of 2 eggs, we stilll had 1 huge pancake leftover and a sausage link. You really get a good amount of food!
We had good service today. We had two people work on us but I believe the younger gal who took our order was our server. She was attentive and nice! This would have been a 5 star visit but the food took a really long time to be prepared. It was a longer wait than normal. I don't know if the kitchen fell behind but it really affected the delivery of our food.
My husband and I had a dope time at brunch today. The wait was a little annoying but we got to share some time together. Our server did a good job and our food hit the spot today. It's always fun to venture out and try other joints but it's nice to know we have this place down the...
Read moreWow. Just left Black Bear diner with my kids and am so disappointed in the host's treatment of my kids. The moment we walked in, the host's tone and choice of words made me uncomfortable. She asked us how many was in the group and I mistakenly answer 5, but we actually had 4. Her response was "5?....5?". I made a simple mistake as my wife did not go with us, but I felt belittled and that she was upset. Again, it is always about tone and approach. Immediately, I thought that was a rough interaction. Then my kids go to the restroom to wash their hands and they were scolded "Are you kids playing around in there?" My oldest son is 12 years old and he told me that the host thought they were playing around because the younger sibling held the door open for his siblings as they walked out. Nothing more. I let it be and proceed with our dinner, which was fine. The waitress was very good and approachable. When it was time to pay, the same host interacted with my kids a 3rd time. My son was looking at the mugs and on his way back to the cashier counter, he step on the round bottom of the post holding up outfits that were for sale. The host scolded him saying that she just cleaned it. I had enough. I looked at her and told her to stop. My 12 year old tried to explained himself and I told him to stop as well. It is ridiculous that when I walk out of a restaurant, I am upset at the treatment of my family. I am sorry, but if the floor is dirty and needs to be cleaned because the restaurant is closing, I believe that the host needs to clean it. Don't scold the kids. Family restaurant will have kids and kids will be messier than adults. The restaurant shares that their Credo #1 is to be thankful that the customer chose to support Black Bear. They also promote the restaurant as a family restaurant. I have to say, my family was not welcomed this evening and we made the wrong choice. I will choose to never go to this...
Read moreMy Family and I love to go to the Black Bear Diner on State Street on occasions when we have some extra money to enjoy a meal out. We are always so happy to go there! My Daughters (aged 12, 14, 18, and 20) always love to give hugs to the wonderful Waitresses and Staff at the Black Bear, and the Waitresses and Staff seem to enjoy receiving their Hugs as well! They always remember us when we go in which makes our eating there even MORE special. We have never been treated in a manner other than with heartfelt cheerfulness and a heartfelt desire to serve us, and make our meal, and even the rest of our day, special! We Thank you ALL for this. We don't often have a very good chance to see the Chefs in the kitchen, but we want to give them FULLY our heartfelt gratitude as well!! We thank these wonderful Chefs also for preparing food that my Wife can eat, too...My Wife has a very restrictive diet, but the Chefs always try their very best to make it in such a way that we CAN eat out on occasion. (by avoiding onions for example, or even other things that can trigger a migraine in her...). The food is always very good! Hot, fresh, delicious, and eaten with thorough enjoyment! We love the somewhat older/rustic/antiques atmosphere of this restaurant as well. It is almost as if eating a meal in the mountains. :)
To ALL of you, your efforts to make our time and Food so special never go un-noticed to us, and we thank you with all of our heart for the goodness and kindness that you've shown us over the years. We shall look forward to seeing you all again, hopefully, in the near future as much as possible.
To the manager(s) of the Black Bear Diner in Boise on State Street, we thank YOU as well. Well done! Well done indeed! We are glad to still have a place where we can go that is clean and friendly, and the food always delicious!
All of our Best to YOU ALL. From Dan and Kristen, and our...
