Hugoâs Deli âď¸âď¸
On 2/11/21, I bought $32+ of food at Hugoâs Deli in Boise, which included pretty much everything except a sandwich. Overall, I was disappointed.
The two items I did like were the fried chicken breast ($3.59) and the fries ($1.82). The fries come with the option of their homemade fry sauce and âspicy ketchup.â I tried both. I like the fry sauce, which has barbecue sauce added to it. I was surprised to find that the âspicy ketchupâ is nothing more than cocktail sauce. I was not so impressed with either item that I see myself returning for them.
The kielbasa sausage ($1.44) looked good but had little flavor and was overwhelmingly âfatty.â I took one bite and was done with it.
I was told none of the sides/salads, with the exception of the coleslaw ($1.93) are made there. They are from Sysco Iâm pretty sure the slaw dressing isnât made there either. Although the cabbage in the coleslaw seemed relatively fresh, it was overly dressed. The potato salad ($2.30) was okay. I didnât like the macaroni salad ($2.07) at all. The only item I cared for was the baked beans ($3.71).
I was told they make their macaroni and cheese ($2.64) in the house. It was not exceptional in anyway. It tasted better than next day after I added salt to it.
I had assumed the soups were made in house. I wish I wouldâve asked before ordering them because I could tell simply from looking at them that they were not. I got a small Split Pea and Tomato Basil with Pasta ($2.95 each). Neither one was good.
The desserts are made by a former employee. I bought the Carrot Cake ($3.39) and an Eclair ($1.99). I didnât like either one. The carrot cake was overly sweet. The eclair looks good, but the puff pastry seems stale and the filling was âmeh.â
Hugoâs Deli is a business I wanted to try for years. Although I did not order a sandwich, based on the large variety of food that I did try, as well as the quality of their deli meat, and how overpriced the food is, the majority of which is not even made in-house, Iâm not inclined to give it a...
Read moreYikes. We came in on the day they were taking pictures for the best of boise? I am so surprised with the gall of this store to even run! The manager Lisa took my order, I guess. She turned around while I was halfway through my order, attempted to confirm my order and then did not deliver the sandwich I asked for. She also threw the sandwich onto my tray and said nothing. She was extremely rude, it was my first time in and I usually don't get bad service in my first time into local places. But Lisa was just rough. Even heard her take an order from another customer and then point to the couple behind them and say "they would love to kindly wait." When my partner took my sandwich back up to get it remade the order was made wrong again, afterwhich I returned to get it finally 75% correct. Lisa, after taking a group picture with the rest of the crew, came up to us and stated she removed my sandwich from our bill and then quickly ran away without saying anything else. Too little too late. First impressions are everything in the service industry and she failed it. I could also tell that all the peons around her were walking on eggshells around her and letting her just thunderstorm on the whole parade.
That said, the night manager was absolutely wonderful. He should be made into whatever he wants here, he really was awesome. If he was the one who served us i definitely would have given 5 stars. He is the heart of the 4 star rating, and he himself...
Read moreDayyyyyum! This place freaking rocks! It's kind of hard to find a good deli still in operation these days. I remember scouting downtown Boise for a good one, and while Main Street and Deli George were good, they don't match up to Hugo's one bit.
My wonderful husband and I shared a turkey bacon avocado on sourdough bread ($7.99). I'm super glad we decided to split because it was huge! There was a good amount of turkey and bacon stuffed into the sandwich. And holy cow was it FRESH! In my opinion, quality trumps over quantity, meaning I'm more than happy to give up an overstuffed meat sandwich for one that's not so overflowing but made with fresh ingredients. The bread was also excellent! They use locally sourced ingredients, and for that I applaud them. You can buy full loaves of Zeppole bread from them. We took home a ginormous loaf of sourdough ($5.99) and have been happily devouring it every chance we get.
The location is a little out of the way if you live anywhere beyond southwest BOI. It's located in an older strip mall right off he corner of Five Mike & Overland. But worth the trek, I guarantee!
I'll be looking forward to my next visit here! Not sure if I wanna branch out because the turkey bacon avo was soooo good! I'd recommend this to everyone in search of a great...
