I had the baseline burger with American cheese and added tomato. The bun is perfect; I wonder where they get those or if they're made in-house? The burger is a smash burger, cooked by smashing the meat down on a hot griddle. I assume 1/4 lb prior to cooking but the gal at the counter didn't know and it isn't on the menu. If I were to go back I'd probably get a double.
Fries are not great IMO. They're coated with something that gives them a fake sort of crunch. I know they're probably made in house, but the fake crunch makes them taste like they came from the freezer.
The onion rings are massive and fried until deep golden brown but they're mostly batter. Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor has the best fried onions IMO.
I also tried the Mac Snack. If you could imagine taking a tablespoon of their mac, rolling it in panko, and then deep frying it, that's what these are.
The soda is overpriced, I think it was $2.25 for a medium Coke and the fountain is behind the counter so unclear if refills are included (assume yes?).
I did like the atmosphere inside and the hip vibe that the owner is famous for nailing. I'm a huge fan (mostly) of the owner's other themed restaurants so I knew going in that details (even logos on the napkins) were going to be perfect. The menu behind the bar is old school with white letters that are manually pressed into little tracks. The entire theme is eclectic and cool. Love the beautiful custom neon sign outside as well.
I consider Five Guys and Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor as the reigning kings of burgers and fries. Bunkhouse needs to step up the fry game and get rid of whatever that coating is, and I feel like the pricing is a bit high. For myself and two kids to get three burgers (all the baseline + cheese and tomato) with fries and medium pops, we were at $34. If I would've skipped the overpriced pop we'd be at $27.
One last note, they don't ask for or in any way suggest a tip is necessary which is a huge bonus. Often it is expected or when they run your credit card they put it back in front of you with the tip line...
Read moreGreat gluten-free options, though they don't have gluten-free sides, but the gluten free buns are better than the regular bun. Milkshakes are rather thin but made of real ice cream, and the soft serve is high quality. The fries are better than any other fast food fry that you could ever find. Meat was delicious, and the bacon burger was absolutely loaded with bacon. All in all this is probably the only gluten-free fast food you will be able to find besides Culver's but even then I found them to be sketchy in the past. Plus bunkhouse has probably the only gluten-free milkshake on the market besides maybe Cold Stone, there are no safety concerns here. just remember to ask for the toppings to be pulled off. Milkshakes come with a chocolate pastry stick and sprinkles. The coffee one is to die for. I'm telling you if you are celiac you need to try this. My boyfriend was literally crying. This restaurant actually left me surprised. It's a union joint so I figured it would be good but this place blew my expectations out of the water. Anyways other good gluten-free places are literally any other Union joint so like the Clarkston Union the woodshop the firehouse vinsetta garage honchos and whatever that place is off of i-75...
Read moreIt was our first time coming to bunkhouse and it's definitely going to be the last. The food was great but the customer service was the worst that I have ever had. When we walked in this female cashier and the young man behind her were at the counter. While we were trying to tell her our order, he was whispering in her ear while they were both giggling the entire time. Okay whatever, it's a burger joint. Pretty relaxed environment, right? After ordering we sat at a table to wait for our food. While we were seated, the customer in the denim jacket tossed a debit card to the cashier(they were clearly friends). She then whipped the card back at him but missed. It flew past him all of the way to where we were sitting and it hit my husband. Obviously there was no injury but we shouldn't have to pay for a meal only to worry about things being thrown at us while we eat. The lack of consideration continued with the rough housing and some female customers flipping off the cashier and vice-versa. We frequent union joints a couple of times a month. We have always had great experiences. We'll stick with the woodshop. I have a short video of some of the nonsense but Google won't...
