I've been to Heisei several times in the past but never had I felt the need to submit a review any where as I thought most of the existing ones were on point. However this past saturday I went again with 4 other friends and the experience forced me to put this disclaimer about this restaurant.
Lets start with the good. Portions were of a decent size, the quality and taste of the food are probably still one of the best you can find in Lafayette. On food alone I would rate Heisei 4/5 stars.
Cons: Waiters and waitresses standing around while 4 out of 5 drinks were empty at our table. When food was served I had to point out that our glasses were all empty before the waitress went to refill them. No apologies were to be had, I think we must have sat there for 10 minutes at the minimum with empty glasses.
But if it was just that I wouldn't have had to leave this review. I can empathize with a long day at work and not putting up your best at the end of your shift. What drove me to leave this review is that when it came to pay the bill a 25% gratuity automatically added to our total. There was no option to decline this addition like some other restaurants have. Not wanting to make a scene I gave them my card. When I got the receipt back for my signature I was appalled. Another hard printed gratuity 15%. At least this time they left me a blank to put in the amount I wanted to tip. I put 0 for the amount.
Had the waitress let us know out of courtesy we already had gratuity added to our bill I may not have had to leave this review. Needless to say I won't...
Read moreThis was my favorite restaurant for five years. I cannot recommend it to anyone now. They have changed to a cafeteria. No wait staff you order at the automat at the front door. You have to pay upfront. If you want something else later you have to go back to the automat and order it, pay for it and then look for it on a wooden table and get water from a yellow plastic igloo water cooler. But the prices are now much higher while the sushi portions are much smaller. Worst of all the sushi guys have no idea how to make sushi. The host is obnoxious but thinks he is one classy guy. The quality is cafeteria middle school or lower. If you have so much money you need to throw some away then and only...
Read moreIt's such a shame what has happened to this place. I've been coming here loyally since about 2006, but it has just kept declining since moving to the new location. Tonight, we were introduced to their new electronic ordering system, which meant the order came out in a very confusing fashion and we were ignored after we got our food. It's a really sad day, but I think I just ate my last Heisei meal.
UPDATE: I've been meaning to do this and just haven't gotten around to it. Since writing this review, Heisei has gone back to full-service and restored their menu to its original state. I'm happy to report this is the Heisei I remember, and I can fully...
