I truly wonder what happened to this place. 10 years ago Steak and Shake was an amazing place to go and dine-in. The servers is used to be kind and attentive to their duties. My most recent trip to Steak and Shake I decided to dine in instead of yours a drive-thru and it was the worst decision ever. It wasn't particularly busy they had plenty of open tables; and yet we were sat at a table that had just been wiped down and was still very wet. I ordered a sandwich with fries and a drink and then I also ordered chili. Typically appetizers and soups are served prior to the entree and this is no different 10 years ago at Steak and Shake. However our server brought absolutely everything at once we sat there for 15 minutes with no drinks no food; nothing. And then our service showed up with her buddy with the drinks and the soups and the entrees. In her defense she was young so she probably didn't have other jobs prior of this; namely serving jobs. It would be the responsibility of the management to train their servers properly Soups come before entree, small salads come before entrees. Drinks come as quickly as possible. So after getting our food and our drinks and chili, our server vanished - as in no longer the face of the Earth doesn't exist anymore freaking vanished. I waited for a refill for nearly 20 minutes. After someone decided to check on us and I got a refill we had already finished all of her food but we are going to eat any of the box and the check. Our server finally re-emerged with her face in her cell phone. She walked past us hurriedly and asked "everything ok here", as though it was rhetorical. At that time we were ready for a box and our check but she was not sticking around long enough for us to ask for those things. I ended up feeling ridiculous and guilty walking slightly behind the counter to grab a box. Oddly enough no one was around to tell me not to do so. As i grabbed the box I saw through the shake window all of the servers standing in a group it is circle all looking down at their cell phones in the back.
Long story short the management needs to seriously step it up. Train your employees properly, hold them to accountability. If you see them on their cell phones tell them either put it away or they are free to go home and look at their cell phone every single day without having to worry about coming to work again, if you know what I mean. If the management doesn't want to do that then their management needs to find replacements for them it just goes up the ladder until eventually someone needs to say for the sake of the brand we need to do...
Read moreTerrible customer service and the COVID-19 safety protocols that are recommended by the CDC are not followed despite the signs outside saying they are.
My family and I are from Chicago but are in South Bend at a vacant family home. We decided to stop by Steak ‘n Shake for their shakes and while waiting for our order we noticed that 100% of the customers who entered the fast food restaurant were not wearing masks. We decided to drive up a little and noticed there were no dividers between the employees and the customers.
The kitchen is directly behind the counter and the machine that makes the shakes are right next to the front register and the employee taking orders for walk-in customers.
To make matters worse, the restaurant has signs that say all employees and the facilities are following proper recommended safety guide lines and practices. Including wearing masks!!! However, the employees had masks on but they were pulled beneath their chins.
We immediately went back through the drive through and asked for the manager and explained what we witnessed. The manager was noticeably annoyed by our observation and our request for a refund. She responded by saying that she could not force customers to wear masks. While this may be true for their company/restaurant they can most certainly make their employees follow proper safety guidelines which include properly wearing their face masks. Because they are not doing so, they are falsifying their practices by hanging the signs stating that they are.
I would recommend for anyone wanting to stay safe during this difficult time to drive down the block to Culver’s. The employees had masks, gloves, and were very professional. I felt...
Read moreIt's sad to see that Steak and Shake has really diminished from what it used to be when I was a kid. We came to this location after being in Michigan for a movie. There was only one other family in eating when we came in. Heads up that they have you do order from a kiosk, I would assume to cut the cost of having someone come out and serve you. We sat fairly close to where the bar top area was, so they did come out and find us with our food which was nice. Both our burgers and fries were HOT and tasted great. It has been so long since we had both been to a steak and shake. I did notice floors were a bit sticky, maybe change mop head and put some degreaser down on the floors after closing to help cut the stickiness off the floor. We also recommend playing some light music at least. Give it a slight diner feel but also to help drown out the quietness and hearing every conversation from behind the grill area. We had heard the workers talking about all sorts of things. I hope some of these steak and shakes stick around and I would love to see even a revamp of these to maybe pick up the moral and customer base again. I would love to see some of these that are still in a busy area, start booming again, before they all close. Their food was good and hot, and I even got a shake and loved it!!! Just hoping they can stick around for...
