Homey Hot Pot is delicious, unique, fun, safe, adventurous, and clean. It is different. It is exotic. It is vegetarian but probably not vegan. It is delicious.
Went with the family and some experienced friends, including my 9 year old daughter. First, the place is bright and clean and glows with bright lights and white tile. The crowd was mostly Asian, but still highly mixed, and excited to be there. We ordered easily, got drinks quickly, they helped my daughter pick a fancy split bowl for soup and a cantaloupe drink she loved. Then, down to the buffet we went. Our experienced friends told us "boil the soup, then turn it to simmer, add a little bit at a time, then eat it, then add more" and I didn't listen.
You pick meats, tofus, everything from sliced chicken and bacon and beef to crab and squid and heart or tripe. You get vegetables, noodles, giant leaves you cook but don't eat, shrimp, noodles, and you put them in your boiling soup base, cook, and then eat. Holy cow it is delicious! I had Spice Base and added a ton of stuff, all at once, which is dumb. My daughter had Pickled Cabbage for half and Tomato for the other half and my wife got Bone, which is just beef stock with a bone. All delicious. My daughter liked cooking her own food, she felt fancy and it made her brave, she ate things she would never normally eat, and loved it. She went full food coma and was quite content, and then she got a plate of dessert treats and loved them all. My soup was Hot and my sinus opened up and I was happy and my face glowed and I learned how to better make my soup and my second trip was smart and great.
For the price, you also get a traditional buffet, sushi buffet, and Mongolian grill if you want. I used the traditional buffet for rice, egg roll, that sort of thing but hit the hot pot ingredients hard. Dessert is both the usual buffet offerings, a cooler full of ice cream novelty individually wrapped, and traditional black rice soups.
It is worth the price, which is high enough you won't go every week, but a great value so you might if you are crazy for it, and it is different enough you should try it. Be brave, be bold, and go wild with food adventure and great flavor. I recommend a guide, experienced friend, but maybe you can go first and be that guide for others. It is a welcome part of Indianapolis and a great sign of the recovering Lafayette Square...
ย ย ย Read moreWent to dinner with a friend. The buffet food was just ok, nothing special but nothing different from any other Chinese/Japanese buffet. Salad choices were very limited. Other items on the buffet were just ok with some items being barely warm but still edible. The cost is comparable to any other buffet. They do also have sushi but considering there was very little offered and at best 4 other ppl sitting in the buffet section this is a gamble. Eat sushi from a buffet at your own risk. There was also a table with young children, eating at the same time, where I witnessed a child, around the age of 4-6, helping themselves to the buffet. I would recommend extreme caution, when eating from any buffet, where children, who pick their noses and rarely wash their hands, are allowed to help themselves to a buffet. I lost my appetite upon observing this nasty child go to the buffet table without an adult. We ordered water to drink which to both of us tasted like watered down tea. There's nothing whatsoever special about the atmosphere. We found it to be extremely dated and unkempt. The so called wait staff was essentially nonexistent especially considering we were there during what should be the busy time of evening (between 5 and 7 pm) no one bothered to remove our dirty plates or ask us if we needed anything or had any questions about the buffet and what was included with the buffet. When going up to the buffet I saw several signs in a foreign language about certain items. I'm unsure what language it was but it looked like Spanish. I was afraid to continue adding anything to my plate since I couldn't understand what I was reading and didn't want to get sick or charged for items that weren't included. No where did I see any signs in English explaining any of this. Will I be back? NO!!! There's numerous other ethnic restaurants in Indianapolis that aren't so rude and do accommodate English speaking ppl. The fact that they don't feel the need to address English speaking ppl, in the USA is...
ย ย ย Read moreDon't let the strip mall face scare you upon arriving as this space does not disappoint. This was my first time visiting and I was quite impressed. We were looking to start a new family tradition for New Year's Eve and I think we found it. This was our very first time trying out hit pot and it was sooo darn good! We did have to wait a short bit for a table to open up on the hot pot side, but it was well worth the wait. Diners have the option of choosing the buffet only or hot pot and sushi which allows you to get anything. We adults got hot pots and the kiddos got the buffet. If you have a kiddo who actually has a great appetite they may be able to finish a hot pot on their own, but I would suggest this for the bigger kiddos for sure. Upon ordering your hot pot they will bring out your broth and turn it on to heat up individually at the table, so one hot pot per person. You then go over to the hot pot section at their buffet and gather all of your favorite ingredients to bring back to your table to cook in your hot pot. And if you think it takes lo g to cook you will be surprised as it cooks quite quickly. When visit this restaurant be prepared to leave completely full and utterly satisfied. You may also get as much sushi as you want here as well as food at the rest of the buffet as well. One thing I really noticed was how fresh all of their seafood and meats were. Not a weird smell in the building! I have to say this was such fun place to experience. If you love noodles and Asian food I highly recommend checking this place out on a day where you have plenty of time to...
