Staff will recognize us as the mixed race (wm/bf) couple who have been coming in for years. We now have a 7 year old son (who is not ready for sushi but will hopefully be someday) We only manage to make it there about 3x/year on average (much less since our son arrived) but we make sure we can get there at least once a year nowadays.
My wife introduced me to Kazan nearly 20 years ago when we started dating. I had had sushi at several different places but this was an enlightening experience for me. The variety, quality, and flavor of the rolls was unlike anything I had ever eaten. I believe Simon was the owner or manager at the time and over the years we’ve interacted with Paul, Rick, David, Sun, and many others.
Fast forward to yesterday. We hadn’t been to Kazan for over a year. We decided we wanted it for a late lunch on a Monday after my wife’s father had passed away and we needed a break from handling all that comes with the death of a family member.
Driving all the way from Anderson, we made our way there and arrived at 1:45pm. When we got there we realized they close from 2-4pm. We probably should have known that but google didn’t specify and we normally go there at night so had never been affected by the midafternoon closing period.
We decided because of the time we would ask if we could just get a carry out order instead so we wrote up a quick order in the car and ran inside to see if they could still make it for us.
At first we couldn’t find anyone in the restaurant but after some searching, Paul noticed us and offered for us to have a seat and asked what we would like to drink and gave us a menu. We apologized for coming so close to closing and said we would be willing to just get a takeout order. He said not to worry and we were long time regulars and we could sit down and take all the time we needed and he would personally wait on us to include making the sushi which was great as always.
We had a quiet, enjoyable, and filling (we always get enough sushi to require the big boat) meal and left ecstatic that we were able to enjoy Kazan despite initially thinking we would have to go somewhere else.
I hesitated to give the details of this review because I don’t want to make people think they can arrive at closing time any day and still be served, so please dont make this a habit. It was an accident on our part and David and Paul were so kind and accommodating, especially because our status as “regulars” has dwindled. It is impressive that everyone still recognizes us despite us only coming once every 1-2 years now.
David, you have a solid business here and I wish you the very best of good fortune. We will do our best to come...
Read moreThis was one of our family’s go-to restaurants for several years. It has since gone downhill. The interior is very shabby. The manager, Jim, apparently has never been in a customer service role as he came out to argue with our family of six over the most ridiculous situation: Two of us ordered a bottle of wine. It came out. Our server poured us two large glasses. We both took a sip of our wine and it tasted horrible. I actually looked at the bottle to see if it was the correct type we ordered. It was, but it was just gross. So we asked our server if we could switch to a different type of wine. He went to the kitchen, spoke to his manager, and came out and asked if it would be okay to charge us for a glass of wine. We said, “No, actually, that’s not okay.” We could tell the server was nervous so we offered to speak with the manager ourselves. Jim came out holding the half empty bottle of wine telling us he needed to charge us for half the bottle because we had two full glasses in front of us. We told him we didn’t pour the wine ourselves and were confused as to why he would charge us for something we didn’t have or want. He was extremely condescending and refused to not charge us for the wine. We told him we didn’t even want a replacement. We were fine without wine at that point if it was going to be that big of a deal to him. He then continued to tell us he had to charge us for half the bottle even though we didn’t have any. We were fed up, walked out, and he lost the business of six people over a bottle of wine. It was absurd. We looked up the wine online and found out it was something you could buy from Target for $4.50. I’m embarrassed for him to have argued that much over a $4.50 bottle of wine that he was going to charge us $20 for. We’re officially finished dining at Kazan and will never return as long as...
Read moreThis isn't Mikado downtown or Benihana, but was hoping for good food and a good experience but unfortunately my group really didn't get either. We came during the National FFA Convention on October 30 (several other FFA groups were in the restaurant too) so I made a reservation ahead of time, while they weren't busy, they didn't have it down that I did when we got there.
There were three hibachi tables going but only one server - he was trying hard but needed help, didn't seem very organized. Food was only meh, I've had better. Our chef wasn't very fun - normally hibachi chefs are all upbeat and joke around for a good show, but ours hardly said a word and only did one trick (flaming onion) after one of the kids requested it. The kids we had with us ordered extra orders of things (noodles, sushi, drinks, etc.) but not sure they were charged appropriately, some of them seemed undercharged and I think some were overcharged.
Two stars because the prices were right for the kind of cooking and quality of food, but wouldn't return, would...
