Haven't been in a while. It's definitely lost some quality but what else is new? So many restaurants have been forced into compromising their quality due to inflation/rising prices for everyone all over. Their prices are still pretty decent so that tells me they don't want to up their prices too much to run off customers so in my mind that means lower quality on some items. They gotta balance it somehow. I get it. The Boudin in a Blanket was an interesting concoction. I think it's worth your try. Chicken fried chicken was good. The fried fish was decent. Interestingly enough definitely more flavorful than pappadeaux cause their catfish is bland every time I get it. Have to douse it in hot sauce and tartar but it was pretty good here before adding all that. Black eyed peas were delish. Red beans and rice were ok. My main complaints were the #1 French fries. Oddly cooked. Outside texture was strange , almost seemed like they weren't fresh even though they were hot but the inside was undercooked on some. #2 The jalapeño cornbread was a total let down. Didn't seem fresh. Wasn't soft, wasn't sweet at all! I asked for honey to kind of sweeten it some, that oddly made it worse. #3 The okra should've been fried longer.

I decided to take a friend of mine to Po' Melvin's on the advice of a co-worker who used to frequent the restaurant. This friend lived in Louisiana for several years, so I figured she would be a good judge of the cuisine. It turns out we were both very impressed. I combined a filet of blackened catfish with some fried shrimp and their excellent fries. I also added a cup of their red beans and rice, something you can always judge a Cajun restaurant by. I was very pleased. Both my friend and myself thought that those were just about the best red beans and rice we have tasted west of the Sabine River and the shrimp were done to perfection. I might have liked the blackened catfish just a tad more seared, but I have found that how that dish is prepared varies greatly from restaurant to restaurant. I think I might have been most impressed with the fries. They were so crisp that they snapped when you broke them and perfectly seasoned with a light touch of Cajun spices. I could have made a meal out of those alone. If you are even in the Irving area and have a craving for Cajun food, you must check out Po' Melvin's.

Cajun cuisine restaurant. The best Hurricanes in the metroplex without a doubt! Very, very strong, reminds me of New Orleans "Pat O'Brien's" hurricanes! 2 drinks and you're there! Super great seafood platter. Everything was cooked perfectly and was so good. Get a side of red beans and rice no matter what else you order. You won't regret it! In Irving on South Beltline Road. Drinks are $8.99 so be ready for a $-$$+ experience. My Son and I spent $100 for 2 giant seafood platters, ($19.99 each), 2 red beans & rice, and 2 hurricanes each. We left a 20% tip, ($17) on a $83 ticket. The service was superb! This was on a weekday late afternoon, and was both lunch and dinner for the day, as we were incredibly satisfied, (stuffed)! I highly recommend this very unique restaurant. "So good you want to slap your mama" is the restaurant's mantra!

Updated 6-26-25:

Went back today after 2 years and this restaurant has gone down a minimum of 3 if not 4 stars from the 5 stars I had previously given it. The chairs weren't level, (all of them), the plastic cups our drinks were served in were all chipped up, and I ordered Meatloaf that was so bland I wanted to slap myself, not my Mama. The mashed potatoes were instant potato flakes, and the pork gravy was bland and the red beans & rice just didn't measure up to my many past experiences with this restaurant. My wife had the chicken fried steak and it was so much like cafeteria food that I was shocked. This is no longer the Po Melvins of the past, it's riding on its name now. This was at lunchtime and I can honestly say I'll not be back ever again. The restaurant is a mess and desperately needs renovating and a new cook.

I'm now lowering my 5-star rating to a 1 at best because we did eat our meal and paid for it. So sad to see such a nice place go " belly up" like this one...

Came during lunch rush. It was very busy so I thought it would be a good down home cooking kind of place... waiter came and asked for drink order, no come products only Pepsi products. I go into the bathroom and it was horrible. Had I not needed to empty my bladder so much, I would have held it... I ordered the chicken fried steak which came with 3 sides, so ordered side salad, green beans, and mashed potatoes. My sister ordered meatloaf with red sauce, fried okra, and Cajun rice. When good came, the meatloaf, which came in a large slice, looked a little different but my sister will normally eat just about anything. She took one bite and I thought she was going to spit it out right then and there. I decided to take a bite and sure enough it was disgusting. Bland meat with literally pasta sauce on it.... not meatloaf in my book. When waiter came over he quickly exchanged it for the country fried chicken, which she said was very good. My chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes.... the potatoes reminded me a lot of KFC potatoes. Except they weren't as smooth. The chicken fried steak was good, a little too much breading for me, but someone else may like it like that. All in all, I give it 2 stars. It just wasn't for me. I would say to try the po boy sandwich, which I've had before and it was very good. I may give it another try...

What a fall from grace. Today, Sunday I decided to pay Po Melvins a visit. Here is what stuck out - Po service, po quality, po temperature, po everything. “Nancy” the ‘ball of sunshine,’ server should not be in the service industry. I’m not about personal attacks but she is not a fit for helping people. The level of not caring is evidently not noticed by management. They changed the size of the glasses to “big gulp” size 40+ oz so that they don’t have to do refills and can provide less service. The syrup was off today so I sent my drink back. Being in the hospitality industry I generally over tip. Today, I tipped maybe 15%. Prices went up, but temperature of my food went down at least 50%. Ice cold fries. A man in a green shirt and shorts delivered my food. I had a feeling that he was the cook, not in any sort of uniform like everyone else, he looked like a couch surfer. Ketchup delivered was 3/4 empty. They had disgusting food on display that had seen better days. And the decor, so bad. For Bad horrible Service, cold food, terrible atmosphere I believe the writing is on the wall for po Melvin’s. Easy fixable, the food is usually good but the prices went way up quality down. I’ve left several good reviews in the past but it’s not there anymore....
