I want to talk about hot tamales. The best I’ve ever had before today were in Mississippi. They have a little “heavenly” chain there, iykyk. They’re very humble and unassuming, like just a tiny trailer with a drive-thru, and the tamales are served straightforwardly in a plain styrofoam box. But they are hands down THE best tamales in the whole US. As a resident of Tennessee who doesn’t get around to Mississippi much, I have been missing my hot tamales for a long time. I’ve tried many, many others, but none of them came close, including my beloved Blues City Cafe on Beale Street. But that all changed today. WOW. Wow. The hot tamales at Doe’s are perfect!! I found out later that this Doe’s Eat Place is actually from Greenville MS, so yep they have those proper, respectable, incredible, perfect, Mississippi hot tamales. They were so good that I nearly wept with unbridled joy. Proper MS hot tamales are served in paper wrappers, are bright orange-red in color, tied with string, delightfully oily and messy, perfectly spicy without going too hard, perfectly flavored, and perfectly moist. They don’t crumble when you cut into them. We got chili (beans and meat) with the tamales, which, rather than overpowering the tamales, was a great, tomato-y complement to them.
Then, our server (I was so stunned by the tamales that I forgot to ask her name) brought me a ribeye, and it was cooked and seasoned perfectly. It’s the best steak I’ve had in Jackson by far. My dining companion got a meatball sandwich, and the meatballs were packed with flavor and smothered in delicious marinara sauce. They were outstanding.
I don’t expect restaurants to have excellent everything, because it’s not a reasonable expectation. But at Doe’s, everything we ate, including the desserts, was of utmost quality and perfect execution.
Besides the mind-blowingly incredible food, the service was amazing, everything was clean, and I loved the dining room. I don’t usually care much about “atmosphere” at restaurants because I’m there to eat, not feel things, but the renovated Greyhound station is adorable, and they did a really good job of making it feel inviting without making it too modern/bougie.
To sum up, we will be back. Ohhhh yes. Yes yes yes. We...
Read moreThis place is overrated and overpriced. There is a 3% charge if you use a debit card. There is a 20% gratuity for parties of 6 or more.
Pros- The atmosphere was pleasant and inviting. The steak was cooked well. It's a larger steak, not necessarily a better cut. The salad was good; however, there is .99 charge for bacon and .99 charge for cheese. In my experience, this usually comes with the salad. The staff was friendly but very inefficient. It took a long time to get service. To be fair, they were short-staffed. However, the time it took to get anything (drinks, straws, salads) bordered on ridiculous.
Cons: The potatoes were overcooked and seemed to be old. Like they were leftovers, reheated. The chili tasted like a basic spice mix added to canned chili. The music is very loud, which made it hard to have conversations. The drinks were mediocre. To be fair, the first drink was absolutely awful. The second drink was mediocre. To note: when we were not satisfied with the first drinks, the hostess informed the bartender who turned around, looked at our table, frowned and turned back around. We had to wait a long time, do a second request and wait even longer to get new drinks.
This was our first time visiting this restaurant. Unfortunately it was a poor impression. Overall, dinner was definitely not worth the money they are charging. Save your money and go...
Read moreThis was a hard three stars. The steak alone, I’d give an easy four - five if it was priced ~$12 less. This place has great potential however, there were several areas that fall short. 1. The bases of the tables have absolutely no business being in a restaurant. The bases are big, round, and they hurt when you slam your knee against them several times through dinner. Beware and stay cautious. 2. The food presentation is lacking. Your dinner and side items are served on two different plates or trays. Baked potato is too large for a small side plate. 3. Speaking of baked potatoes, very strange for a high-priced restaurant to provide sour cream in a packet and use low grade bulk shredded cheese. 4. The dining on the bar side is very loud with a modest number of people I’d suggest sound dampening materials for the walls and tablecloths. 5. The side salad that comes with your dinner is laughable at best. Chemical tasting lettuce out of a bag with tomatoes and croutons. 5. The meal was supposed to come with bread for the table - ours didn’t.
I will say that the filet was cooked perfectly and probably one of the best I’ve had in Jackson.
I hope management refines the ambiance and removes the cheap presentations and...
