We’re here for a horse show and while staying at our Airbnb we opened the guest book and we were directed to eat at Saltine, great!
My husband, friend, his wife and I all agreed this could be an awesome spot to checkout. The hostess was amazing, polite, and funny.
Our waiter started out pretty cool and laid back. I must state that there are 4 of us (3 white people, 1 black person ‘me’). Our waiter was a tall skinny white guy (I wish I had gotten his name, but I don’t recall him providing it). Toward the end of our meal (which was quite delicious) things got awkward. Our waiter grabbed all dishes off of the table, except mine… I even attempted to hand them to him and he walked away. He returned four (4) additional times, speaking with us, reaching over me to grab other items and he still did not remove my cleaned plate. Got ya. My plate was only removed when dessert was brought out by a shorter black woman, and she immediately grabbed my dish/plate.
Furthermore, our waiter apparently mis-poured two (2) wine glasses (which he openly stated), approached our table and offered them to our friends, great! They turned them down and he went to the next table as though we were invisible (granted, we would have turned them down but wow). As he walked away, our friend stated, “Why is he only asking women? Also, why is he only asking men and women? Moreover, what made him think y’all would want it!?” We both shrugged our shoulders, as in, we don’t know.
Lastly, it took an additional 20mins for us to get our tickets to checkout. It was almost as though he did not want to bring it to us. We openly questioned the status of our ticket several times. During the last time we openly questioned the status of our ticket, the hostess walked by and overheard. The hostess immediately stated, “Oh, I’ll be right back!” Not 5 seconds later, our waiter showed up asking about our tickets, and then provided them.
This experience was not what we were expecting. We’ll also inform our Airbnb host. This turned an exciting night into a “why?” night. We will not patronize Saltine, anymore. However, we did appreciate the food and the service provided put a huge damper on...

On a recent trip to Mississippi, I went out with my Jackson food crew. I was their guest that night and luckily I ended up at one of Jackson's finest establishments, Saltine restaurant. Saltine is a widely known Creole and seafood local hotspot in a very modern, trendy but still a touch rustic setting. My foodie friends were veterans of the Jackson food scene, so I sat back and let them order !!
First up was one of my favourites Alligator and Andouille Gumbo with Delta Blue Rice and green onion. This a was very hearty and enjoyable gumbo, not too thick but still on the hearty side. This was followed by a sampler plate of fresh oysters, and Oyster Lafitte - A trio of baked oysters topped with crawfish tails, bacon, parmesan, and hot sauce butter we then tried the very interesting Crab & Avocado Toast made with Gulf crab, Gil's sourdough, lettuce, citrus vinaigrette, and it was way better than it sounds !! I've never had PorkBellies in a Cajun/Creole restaurant so that's what hit the table next!! These tasty little morsels were made with Crispy pork belly, pepper jelly, and boiled peanuts !! Yes, it was as good as it sounds!! The final app that night was high on the calorie chart but higher on the flavour chart. The Feta Mozz Gratin is served in a mini Iron Skillet with Melty mozzarella, feta, gyro spiced lamb, kalamata olives, grilled bread, oh yeah Baby, I was tempted to get another but physical space in my stomach was filling up.
Finally, after all those apps and couple of Southern Prohibition Brewery Company beers, it was time for the big Kahuna, the main course our server had mentioned some very enticing features that night, but being the adventurous type I went for a Saltine staple, Blackfish broiled and slightly blackened served with a Brussels sprout smash, grilled red potatoes and buttered crab meat, this lightly textured, firm but flaky local favourite was the Bomb if you haven't tried Blackfish, also known as tautog, you don't know what you're missing. Saltine restaurant has an amazing selection of food and drink, a great ambiance and great service. It is a must if you're ever in Jackson...
Read moreSo today I took my family out to dinner. We had a reservation at 8 pm. The food and the waiter were excellent. The bartender on the other hand was extremely rude. My father ordered a margarita. On the menu it states it comes with a salt rim. Any person that has had a margarita knows that a margarita comes with a salt rim. Not according to this bartender. I addressed this w the waiter. He said he would take care of it. The next minute the bartender came storming to the table to demand the drink back. I told her, never in my life have I ever had a person ask for the drink back to just put a salt rim. If the menu states a salt rim, I should expect a salt rim. This drink was for my father, and she wanted him to return the drink and then she would make a new one. If that is not the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard, I do not know what to say. I knew she was going to dump it out anyway. She stated she had a long day, that is no excuse. As if I didnt have a long day and wanted to spend time with my family. To come storming to the table and asking for the drink back, instead of apologizing for the mistake or compromising by bringing a small plate w salt with it, was ridiculous. Idk what happened today and all is forgiven because the waiter apologized on her behalf. I think management should look to a new bartender. She talked to me as if I was stupid and had an attitude with the waiter and the entire table. There was a reason why I had 3 stars before but it now goes down to one star. I will make sure to tell everyone I know in the Jackson area, that this place isnt it. Not anymore. Waiter was 10/10 and deserves better. Food was excellent. It was weird that the fried green tomatoes came dueing the main course when jt was time for the main course but it was nice that it was made fresh and...
