I went for breakfast on Sunday and sat at the bar area. Friendly staff. There were a lot of people in there. That’s a good sign usually. I was not impressed with my food. I ordered the southern Benedict with hash browns. It came out luke warm. My hash browns were undercooked and barely warm. The biscuit served on the Benedict was not good at all. It was like on of the frozen already cooked ones you can buy at Sam’s and reheat. Not fluffy. Hard like it had been sitting. Cornmeal on fried green tomatoes was a little raw and pimento cheese was not good at all. No flavor. My meal was mediocre at best unfortunately. I was able to see lots of other dishes come out of the kitchen that looked good and were hot other than one plate with an English muffin that came out halfway black and burnt. I did also seen that they carry ken’s salad dressings. It’s the little things that make restaurants that much better. If they took the time to make their own dressing it would make salads better. If they took the time to make their own big fluffy green arm biscuits it would’ve made my dish way better. They could even offer different kinds of flavored biscuits. The coffee was pretty good for diner coffee. Loved the music selection they had playing. I did use the restroom and the womens was out of order so I had to use the mens. The restroom needs some attention. The floor was gross. Especially underneath the urinal. Don’t forget to mop under the urinal. My whole experience was mediocre. I have yet to find a really good breakfast spot in Jax. I will give this place another try because other dishes did look good. Mine might’ve been...
Read moreI was really excited to try this place because Nate Does Food reviewed them and gave them the thumbs up. Right off the bat we were already disappointed. We were seated and waited quite awhile to be approached by our server. Once she did finally make it to our table she did not greet us with a good morning or a how are you, she just said, "What do you want to drink?" After she took our drink order, we said thank you, and instead of saying you're welcome or even just giving us a smile, she walked away. Her attitude never changed during our visit. As we waited what seemed like forever for our food, we noticed multiple tables sending food back or complaining about the service. The table next to us had egg shells in her eggs and the other table next to us waited 10 minutes for silverware after they had already gotten their food. My husband ordered the Big Daddy Omelette and I ordered the Chicken and Waffles. The food was mediocre and extremely bland. My waffles and his grits had zero flavor. We had to ask twice about his side of gravy and he was missing home fries inside his omelette. I asked for a side of strawberries, which was $1, and I got, what looked like, two strawberries cut up into small pieces. The coffee was terrible and they only had vanilla coffee creamer, no regular. We were never asked how our food was or if we needed anything else. When we left, we were never greeted out the door. I was super disappointed and will never be back. There are so many other places to have an amazing, friendly brunch in...
Read moreEarlier in March, my wife and I visited one of our favourite spots to grab breakfast: Canopy Road Cafe. This is a very quaint place, and there seriously isn't much to complain about. I happen to think the tables for two are a bit small. Otherwise, I can't think of a thing.
The service is always excellent. The coffee was HOT, and they didn't bat an eye when Cherrie ordered unsweetened tea with lemon. We made the strategic error of ordering appetisers and main courses at the same time, meaning everything basically showed up at once. And on a small table, there was very little space.
We began with the best cinnamon roll in all of Duval County (and probably St. John's County, too). If for no other reason, this is worth coming for. We also got fried green tomatoes, which came with homemade pimento cheese. Awesome.
I got the eggs, turkey sausage, and biscuits and sausage gravey. The eggs, over medium, were perfectly prepared, and the turkey sausage was great. The biscuits were excellent, and the sausage gravey, while not the best I have ever had, was still very, very good.
Of course, Cherrie ordered her traditional avocado toast. She absolutely loves the bread they use and are very generous with the avocado, tomatoes, feta cheese, and a balsamic glaze. This is definitely top two on her list of places for avocado toast.
On the whole, we love this place and the delightful atmosphere as well as the great food and service. We recommend it.
