El Cerro Tacos — Restaurant in Jacksonville

I wish I could choose zero stars for this review. I have never experienced service like I did tonight. I called and placed an order for pickup. Upon my call being answered, the women was rude, the music was so loud that I could barley hear the women, so I’m sure she could barley hear me. I ordered 3 items, my last item, I asked if they would tell me if there were any vegetables on it. She then responded and said “not to be disrespectful but I don’t have time to look at the menu to tell you what comes on that item, can you pull up the menu and look. I was looking at the menu when I asked her about it and told her that it did not specify if there were any vegetables. She then went on to say that she has been backed up on orders, people in front of her, but then told me what came on the item. While on the phone, she was talking to multiple other people rather than paying attention to the call. I put that aside and went to pick up my order. Once I grab my order, I realize that my order was messed up. I went back to the window and spoke with her about my order and what part of it was wrong. She then goes and finds the item that I ordered. I then asked if there were vegetables on the item as. I requested them to not have them on there. She stated that there shouldn’t be but she couldn’t check due to COVID ( which I understood). I checked the food and the items that I requested to NOT be in there was in there. This was my 3rd time going back to speak with them after waiting an hour for 4 items. Once I finally got the corrected order, got home and found that my item was ALSO wrong, however, I still ate it, but while eating it I found a HAIR in it. Everything / everyone was great except for our server. The man at the front who sat us was incredibly friendly, and so were the other female servers other than ours. Our server greeted us, and got us drinks but did not come back to take our orders for awhile. Another female server noticed we had been siting for quite some time and asked it we had been taken care of, we told her we were ready to order and she said she’d grab our server. The male who seated us ended up coming over to take our orders. After that, our server came back and stated her other table was being needy, rolled her eyes and left. After that everything was okay. Food was great, the male came back and checked on us and so did 2 other female servers so definitely great service there. When it came to the bill I wanted to pay $30 on my gift card and the rest on my credit card. I told our server very clearly that the gift card has exactly $30 and whatever is rest on the tab to put it on my other card. She comes back saying my gift card declined so she ran my credit card for the full amount... she didn’t even come back and ask if it that was okay and thats completely not acceptable. I had another form of payment I would have preferred. But regardless of that, she hands me the declined transaction receipt... she tried running the gift card for the full bill, which was more than the $30 I clearly stated was on there so of course it failed. If she would have came over before running my credit card for the full amount without my permission, I could have caught her mistake. This place had great reviews so we decided to give it a shot!

I usually don't factor price into a rating (you can always check the prices online before you come in and not go if it's too expensive) but across the board this place was pretty expensive for being a Mexican restaurant in a city full of pretty good Mexican places. Most aggregious was the $8.50 large Modelo. Margaritas were also pretty expensive but at least they were a little larger. Most plates ran $15+ and the lunch portions were still $9. May actually be cheaper to get stuff alacarte than get a plate to be honest. The main reason I'd probably go elsewhere next time I'm in the mood for Mexican.

Moving past price, this place had real style -- the menus looked great and matched the interior decor. Artwork throughout was great and they had a hip vibe that didn't try too hard. Music was good, but it was too loud (to the point that it made conversation difficult) and upset one of my kids. Kid needs to get over it but that was how loud it was, if you are sensitive to loud noise order to go!

Food was really good. Wife isn't a fan of Mexican food but she really liked the fish tacos she ordered. Kids enjoyed the chicken taco and the cheese quesadilla, both with rice. I thought the refried beans tasted pretty plain compared to other replaces I've been when I sampled my kid's refried beans.

I ordered the A.C.P. - chicken strips with a rich cheese sauce and rice. I've had a similar dish before and loved it but the cheese sauce was a little too salty and rich by the end. Though the salsa and queso dip we ordered was really thin and watery. Overall food quality was very good though. Wait staff was decent, no drawbacks but not a standout. Solid 4 out of 5 stars,...
