I'm a bit surprised at the high ratings for Apna Indian Grill. To me, the food quality is on par with what you may find at a typical Indian restaurant on Devon, which aren't that great. Solid authentic flavors and spices appear to have diminished more and more over the last 12+ years. Better authentic flavors appear to be in the Chicago suburbs.
We ordered a variety of dishes for take-out: Dal Tadka, Channa Masala, Baingan Bharta, Butter Chicken, Kadai Paneer, and samosas. The samosas were a perfect size for one person, but the potato masala wasn't flavored enough to stand on its own unless you added chutney to them. The channa masala and butter chicken were enjoyed by us. The dal tadka missed the mark with little or no seasoning or lime juice. I'm often surprised by restaurants overlooking acid in their food. The baingan bharta was quite smoky, which isn't how I was brought up, but perhaps others enjoy it. Last, the kadai paneer was flavorful, but had a far darker (intense) curry color than I have ever experienced here or in India.
Requests for the restaurant: (1) Please consider flavoring the food more thoroughly, including acid, so they stand on their own. Do not expect a chutney or achaar to carry it. (2) Please indicate how many pieces of your appetizers are included per order. Neither the menu nor Cuboh indicate how many samosas are included for $6 per order. (3) Indicate that rice is apparently included with some dishes. We were not expecting so much rice, since your menu also has rice as a side order. (4) Indicate that Cuboh charges a 5% service fee for using their tool. It is unfair to customers to only become aware of that after an order has...
Read moreAuthentic Indian Excellence - No More Devon Avenue Trek Required! Apna Indian Grill & Bar on Irving Park Road is a fantastic addition to the neighborhood, bringing authentic Indian cuisine with an impressively broad selection right to our doorstep.
We no longer have to make the trek all the way to the Devon neighborhood for amazing Indian food - and that alone is worth celebrating! But Apna Indian Grill & Bar doesn't just fill a gap - they truly raise the bar.
The appetizers are fresh and come in generous portions. We especially loved their fresh-baked bread, particularly the garlic naan, which is absolutely stellar.
The Lamb Vindaloo was our standout dish - incredibly flavorful with perfectly cooked lamb in a rich, layered sauce that showcases real depth. You can taste the quality ingredients and attention to detail in every bite. The Paneer Makhani was also excellent as a vegetarian option, bursting with flavor and featuring an amazing sauce that's perfect for dipping that fresh naan.
Another highlight: the Chicken Biryani was perfection! How many times have I ordered biryani only to receive dry, clumped rice? Not here! The rice was perfectly cooked and beautifully coated in seasonings and sauce, while the chicken was tender and fresh throughout. Next time we absolutely need to try the lamb biryani - it's probably just as amazing. We'll report back because we're definitely going back!
Highly recommend Apna Indian Grill & Bar for bringing top-tier Indian cuisine to the...
Read moreI have dined here in person twice. The first time I got the masala dosa and vegetarian thali. The second time I got the dosa combo. The dosa combo includes a masala dosa, 2 idli, 1 vada, sambhar, coconut chutney, and tomato chutney. The vegetarian thali includes basmati rice, 2 veg curries (usually chana masala and a paneer-based curry), 1 butter naan, salad, pickle, and raita. I also got 2 mango lassi each time. The mango lassi are the best I have ever had. The coconut chutney was beautifully seasoned with black mustard seed and its texture was perfect for dipping. The tomamto chutney, I really liked, but its acidity might be offputting for some. The dosas were well cooked and the accompanying masala potatoes were excellent. I loved the sambhar, one of the best that I have ever had. I did not much care for the idli, but the vada was great. The mango lassi had a savory spice on top that gave it a nice flavor and its texture was thick and rich. The service was attentive but not excessive. The restaurant is well decorated and the amenities are clean. My only complaint about the atmosphere was that the kitchen was excessively noisy at times and that interefered with our conversation. Overall, if you want great Indian food on the North side of Chicago and do not want to travel up to Devon, this is a...
