First Slice is walking distance from my apartment on Manor. I like the atmosphere and the service. I've only tried one slice of their apple cheesecake which was flavorful, sweet, and a lighter style cheesecake which me and my girlfriend really enjoyed. The chai latte's I've had have been mostly good but not super consistent.
Unfortunately my reason for this review is based on the two sandwiches I tried which were pretty lackluster. First I ordered the duck confit and the flavor as totally flat. The duck wasn't seasoned, the mushrooms were grey and bland, and what was worse was the sundried tomato component. At first I thought they completely forgot to put it on the sandwich which would be okay -accidents happen, but after opening the sandwich I saw the very tiny amount they did put, and it was almost as if they kitchen had barely any left and decided to give me the tiny speck they had left. I decided to send the sandwich back and order Abuelita's Tuna sandwich. It's described as a Spanish style tuna salad which in my mind I thought it would be something different. Maybe seared tuna steak, maybe olives, or an oil vinaigrette, or something Mediterranean, but maybe I had high expectations. But for $10.50 I think the sandwich should be really good. It was basically a mayo tuna salad with lettuce and tomato.
I will keep going to try out some different baked goods or a quiche but I doubt I'll try any more sandwiches. I see they have a good local roots and a positive mission so I write this reluctantly, but if I go and have more positive experiences I'll gladly...
Read moreFood has always been incredible. The Latin Hip Hop salad is a neighborhood favorite of mine, and every pie has been outstanding, with a special nod to the chocolate pecan, French silk, and chocolate peanut butter.
As for the service - the staff went above and beyond for my Thanksgiving pie this year. A mix-up caused my pie to be ready at the Andersonville location, not Manor, the day before the holiday. After a night and morning spent at the emergency vet and with bronchitis myself, that extra distance felt insurmountable. The woman I spoke with on the phone (Jennifer? I regret that the stress of the day affected my memory) tracked down my order, then promised to bring it from Andersonville to the Manor for me, since she had to make a trip over there that afternoon. It had been such an awful day, and that little bit of kindness was much appreciated. (Plus the pie was phenomenal - warming up the chocolate pecan makes it even...
Read moreThe pies are really good and reasonably priced.
The service was not the best though. We preordered for thanksgiving and chose a 9AM pickup. I arrive at 9, and there’s already 5 other people waiting outside. The staff inside can clearly see us waiting in the cold, but just ignore us. At 9:15 we are let in and the staff gave us attitude and said we should be “thankful they opened early for us”……why would you give the option for us to pick up at 9am then? I get that thanksgiving is a stressful time for a pie shop, but maybe just acknowledge that you are running behind and apologize rather than giving a snide attitude, acting like the customers were in the wrong for showing up at the exact pickup time they chose online.
Pies are really great though, a hit at...
