I judge all Vietnamese restaurants against Mai Lee in St. Louis, especially their Nuoc Cham (dipping sauce made with fish sauce) and rice dishes (but not their pho). LD Pho is one of the closest and tastiest that I've found. I ordered the pork spring rolls and the crispy pork inside made it one of the best I've had. The peanut sauce was average, but it's peanut sauce so it's pretty darn tasty regardless. I got the combination meat rice plate and enjoyed the grilled pork, Chinese sausage, egg and other fixings. The only thing missing was the traditional egg loaf cake, but the Nuoc Cham was on point. My only complaint was the jasmine rice was not broken and was on the soft side, making it mushy when sprinkled with the Nuoc Cham. Ambiance was fine for a regular restaurant and it was pretty quiet with more take out customers than dine in. Service was also fine, we just had to flag the server down whenever we needed anything. What stood out the most was that after paying the bill they asked if we wanted more water and we declined. However, after 10 minutes my friend and I were still talking and ran out of water. The server returned and filled our waters which was very welcome. Most restaurants are happy to ignore you once you've paid so this level of service deserves special recognition. Price was reasonable for dinner for two with an appetizer at $46 after...
Read moreThis is another great little spot in the Albany Park neighborhood. As the prices are a bit steep, but I always say that you get what you pay for. The menu is impressive. Everything is totally authentic and each dish features it's Vietnamese name - fun for those of us who are familiar with the language but for those who are not you have the option of ordering by number. The most popular dish is definitely the ubiquitous spiced noodle soup, pho, but why not be adventurous and try a curry of frog legs? The bahn mi are fantastic and I could eat two in one sitting (which is not to say they're small - they're just addictive) and I recommend the lemongrass beef. The space is quite small but it really feels like you're taking a vacation out of the states. The decor is cute and there's always a lot of couples dining during peak hours. With that, it can be difficult to squeeze yourself in and it's not the type of place you'd take a big group to but that's part of the charm. In my experience ordering a take-away, the staff were very friendly and the service was fast and graceful. I wish that more small venues were...
Read moreIt has been a few years since I last visited. Nothing like what I remember. Placed an order for take out, right when I walked in I spoke to someone which started out alright, I noticed a note posted about the meat which made me ask questions but the person who took my order seemed annoyed at my question. Their response was to turned to shout at the kitchen. Food was prepared pretty quick which I really appreciated, before I left there were a few bags that they placed on a table so I asked which were mine and again the person seemed annoyed when all I wanted to do was make sure I took my completed order. I did like that they had everything separated so that it is fresh when you are ready to eat and not too soggy but noticed the raw meat had been put into a bag even though I asked if they could cook it for me as I live in the neighborhood and would be eating right away. Unfortunate to say I...
