5 months going into this place for lunch, this is still a five-star place. Lunch portions became a little less generous, but this is still one of the few places you can get a full lunch under $10 in the area.
If you are into Malay fare, you'll like laksa, char kway teow, roti canai.
June 2017 ============ After Satay House on S. Main became increasingly bad and eventually closed, there were no real options for Malay food in the area.
My friends and I went to J's for lunch today and had some of the Malay Staples, such as roti canai, char kway tew, also Singapore noodles and gen tso's 🐔
Roti canai was almost as I remember having it back in Singapore and Malaysia, maybe the curry was a bit more watery and less intense and I didn't find any chicken meat and bones in it. Roti, itself, was at the right crisp level.
Lunch portion of the char kway tew was only 7.50, but also on a smaller side (probably for a good cause :) Tasted pretty close to what I had back in Asia. As with every malay restaurant establishment in US, I had to specifically ask for sambal belachan, I wish they served it by default, but I realize it could be a waste - how many people in John's Creek area would want a ground shrimp chili paste as their default condiment?
Singapore noodles my friend had were not the way I remember where they were yellowish from all the curry they were soaked in. Local version was more like a stir fried generic noodles.
General tso's chicken looked like in any other place, can't really comment about it.
I'll definitely go back to try other items on the menu, Laksa would...
Read moreWow what a complete disaster! We arrived on Valentine's day 2018 expecting a bit of a wait because we had no reservation. However when we arrived there were 3 four-cover tables empty but due to an air of total confusion and serious under-staffing we waited over 20 mins to be seated. Once seated, instead of waiting on us, the head waiter considered it more important to clean down other tables than take care of customers already seated. No offer of drinks, no tableware or napkins and nobody even realizing we were there! 15 minutes later we were given menus and finally asked for our drink order. 10 minutes later our order was taken. When it arrived the waiter left us still with no eating utensils and still no napkins. We ordered our dishes extra spicy, they arrives luke warm and no spice-heat whatever. Nonetheless we decided to continue trying to save our valentine's evening but vowing this would be the last time they would see us! My beef dish was literally inedible, gristle and fat ruled the plate and any real connective tissue was so tough I had to remove it -embarrassingly-from my mouth . We got up immediately and left out of absolute disgust, what a disaster. I am a 40 year restaurateur that understands the protocols running a successful business and how difficult it can be and therefore consider myself a patient and understanding customer, but this was...
Read moreSo apparently a Chinese restaurant can screw up Fried Rice. Check the pics.. I got white rice barely covered in soy sauce…. Where are the eggs, veggies, meat??!! How can you screw up fried rice?
Our order was fried rice, general Tso’s chicken, kungpao chicken,lo mein and basil rolls.
The basil rolls were fresh and delicious. The lo mein was passable compared to the other disasters. The generals chicken was ok too but the portion didn’t even fill the to-go box.. was only 1/2 full and just 2 pieces of broccoli. Oddly it had lots of chili’s which was probably meant for the Kung pao. But the chili’s themselves were bland. I ate 5 straight-up with no effect or hotness.
Kungpao…. I ordered mine extra spicy…. I didn’t get that or even true kung pao chicken. I got huge stewed chicken pieces with a vegetable mix in a watery semi-brown broth with peanuts sprinkled on top. No chilis and no favor. Check the pic. Sorry that’s not kung pao.
Bottom line.. If you are craving Chinese food and don’t really care, this place will probably do. The service was friendly and fast. But for me, the food was lacking and I rather wait 5 extra minutes to get food made the right way then get...
