My wife and I had seen several people reviewing this restaurant within the local Des Moines foodie group giving this place high praise, especially for their poke dishes, and decided to give it a try. We ended up going for lunch.
Let me start by saying that this restaurant is not for the sushi connoisseur. You will not find exotic fishes and different roes peppering complicated rolls. However, the seafood they did have (salmon, tuna, eel) were fantastic and paired with the freshest fruits and veggies made the simple Japanese dishes really pop.
We got salmon poke rice bowl, tuna poke salad, a tuna and mango sushi cupcake, an unagi roll overflowing with mango and miso soup. Everything was so fresh and tasty- the simplicity of the dishes allowed the flavors to really shine.
I have to assume limiting the types of fish offered was a deliberate choice to keep seafood costs down to provide super fresh accoutrements.
I love sushi, and maybe I'm biased because salmon and tuna are my favorite, but, maybe that gives me some credibility to say that this fish was great and I can't...
Read moreThis is by far my favorite restaurant in Urbandale. The food is indescribable. Sushi cupcakes... Sushi rolls with Rice Krispies cereal...
Sounds questionable at best and nauseating at worst, but.. it works. The sushi cupcakes (there are three) are huge chopped up chunks of meat, avocado, whatever the toppings are, compressed on a shaped circle of sushi rice. You need a fork for this bad boy. They are deceptively huge, as they cost less than a standard California roll, but fill you up.
The gentleman that is always there preparing the sushi when I come in is just a darling man. He is sweet and kind. You can see the pride he takes in his work. He makes great recommendations. He packages to go orders with care.
To be warned, you will be waiting a abit for your food to be done if you go there. This is a place for you to sit and talk with friends and family while he carefully prepares each bite to perfection. It's...
Read moreFinally had the pleasure of trying Sushi a Go Go with a friend last week. Overall, things were fairly decent. We ordered a lot of items to try and the price was right! I was even given an order seaweed salad “on the house” because he told me he didn’t have enough for a full portion. I was shocked because I feel like the amount he served me was standard. It was a very kind gesture.
As for the rolls, I thought they were okay! Everything seems a little too “saucy” for my liking.
We ordered: • seaweed salad • *cupcake B • *cupcake C • salmon poke • captain crunch There was only one guy working and doing everything, but he was still very prompt. We were in no rush but he continued to...
