Another restaurant creating mixed impressions for me, but most are good. Started with drinks. I merely had a big XX draft. My wife had a pina colada, which they prepare differently than any we have ever had. Made with Bailey’s, Malibu Rum and their own pina colada mix, this was the most unique, rich and flavorful Pina Colada either of us have ever tasted. Such a step up for the usual. We then ordered a bowl of Queso which was much too big. They need a small and large. Also, this is really bad Queso. No real flavor other than cheap melted American cheese, or at least that is what it tasted like. If you like Queso, avoid this. The free chips and salsa to start were above average as far as salsa flavor, so we just kept with those. My wife had the Beny’s Combo – a really nice offering for you to mix and match between enchiladas, tacos, tostadas and tamales. She ordered three different enchiladas, but was served two along with a cheese taco. The enchiladas were good but the taco was simply a tortilla filled with shredded cheese. I had the Migue’s Tacos. The tacos themselves were excellent – filled nicely, good flavor to the chicken, and nice amount of onion and peppers. This element of the meal was five star. My meal came with what was billed as avocado salad. What that turned out to be was a few slices of avocado on a bed of brown, wilted lettuce. The chef and the serve should have been embarrassed to serve it the lettuce was so past its prime. The charro beans on the side were runny and flavorless. The rice on the side was very ordinary and also lacked flavor, like from a mix. The alligator sauce served on the side was some kind of green sauce with a high level of pepper kick. No subtlety, so not really very good. The refried beans on the side of my wife’s meal were equally ordinary and tasted like they came from a can. The service and enthusiasm of the team was excellent. The space itself is small and intimate in that TexMex dive kind of way.
So, overall a great pina colada, good enchiladas, excellent Migue’s tacos, and perfection as far as service. But, all of the sides and extras were on a scale from ordinary and dull to terrible. We will give it one more chance because there were quite a few other main courses that seemed very creative and interesting, and if they are like the Migue’s tacos, then it could be worth a visit or two. But, unless the sides are improved, this can’t rate more...
Read moreI’m not sure what the more than 1 star reviews drank but this establishment does not merit that ranking. ( Coming from 16+ restaurant experience from each level to management) Staffing and training is this restaurant’s weakness. Cleanliness is lacking… this location is dated and this isn’t why I write this. Windows, baseboards, vents, “window” a/c units, chairs, booths and the MANY window and wall signs seem to not be cleaned or maintenance has yet to be done. It didn’t appear that dishes were throughly cleaned. Uniforms stained and worn out. Food quality… who makes guacamole with lemon and not lime, it was lacking! Bland chicken taquitos. Chips seemed like they were carryover from early afternoon. Salsa tasted like it came from a jar. I purposely focused on looking outside to avoid picking up my things and leaving because I vowed it was an adventure to try something new, not to mention my significant other would have been mortified. The layout is questionable. Our server was polite but didn’t listen well. No salt on margarita was ordered but that’s what was received. This place seemed popular and this IMHO/guess is because it’s been here for a long time and options are limited for the business hours. A staple in the community; one that needs to close to clean up and reorganize. I would have added photos but that would have...
Read moreThis place has been highly recommended by many of my clients and close friends that live in the Justin area. So I decided to finally give it a shot as I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD! I'll start with saying I tried to call the restaurant to place a togo order but didn't get an answer so just decided to place it in person. When I arrived it was so busy that I had to park around the block an walk a ways to get to it. When I went in it took some time for someone to greet me and take my order. Which I understand completely as they were pretty busy! 😍 Placed my order waiting about 10-15mins. Got my order (chicken verdea enchiladas and 2sides of beans) took it home an went to enjoy it thinking these are going to be great and spicy. Made with tomatillo sauce mmm okay... take a bite and was sadly disappointed. I expecting more kick but instead it was sweet. The beans were alright. I saw chips an salsa an thought okay maybe that will have some kick and it did slightly but it was very watery. As for the large dr togo I got a small cup. No one said anything about cup sizes so guess that's normal?
Staff was very friendly but I may have gone on a bad day because this isn't a place I would highly recommend for good...
