Well... What can I say. I disagree with most reviewers.
The place is dank, as soon as I walked in I questioned if I should walk out (spoiler: I should have.) It was dimly lit, smelled odd or musky (how!? it's Chinese food!), and have of a sleezy feel. Serious, these were my thoughts in the first 40 seconds of trying this place. I threw caution to the wind though and listened to my gut, literally.
The next clue came swiftly, the typical Wyandotte county price hike. The meal costs just under $10 without a drink. I suppose I am used to paying a little less than that. For my wife and I to eat there it was $19.95. The food must be good I thought, or they are flying on their laurels I thought (latter was true.)
We were surprised by typical "Chinese fare", but also American favorites like chicken nuggets and cheese sticks, fries and bacon wrapped... Uh... something.
As I loaded my plate with the AmeriChin cuisine I was getting excited. I even took a chance on the dumplings.
After my plate was stacked to capacity we sat, prayed, and ate. The excitement quickly started simmering down from this point.
Nuggets, bleh! Super old! Next! Dumpling, mmmm.... Wow not too bad! Noodles, ... Yuck. Tastes like burnt oil. Eat anyways because noodles are like crack, I think. Egg roll, eh, passable. Eat half. Sesame chicken, tasty, but generic and overly sweet, even for Chinese. Teriyaki chicken on a stick ...., ..., Oh. My. This is like leather. Not jerky, leather. Put aside, inedible. Never done that before.
Ok, mozzarella stick time. Bite, gnaw,.... Barf. Gross. Really gross. Ever had 2 day old cheese sticks warmed back up and left for a healthy 8 hours to cool off? Me either! Until I came to this joint. I spat it out and started losing my appetite. This is saying a lot, I like to eat and it might be known. I don't mind reheated food, I have ate old food well past it's prime. It's one of my quirks. This type of thing doesn't bother me. But this was beyond unacceptable. I paid for this food! Half of my plate was sitting to be thrown out! I seriously detest throwing away food. But this wasn't food. It had passed into the next category that comes after food, typically after digestion. That's right, waste.
By this time I've if the workers had noticed my disgust and asked if something was wrong. I told the truth and shared my opinion. I decided not to eat any more and politely wait for the wife to finish. The worker brought the manager over, I told her if my disdain and she offered to make whatever I wanted fresh.
I laughed a bit at the offer, you see... I want everything fresh. I try as much from the buffet as I can. She kept asking me too... I told her no several times, not to worry about it. She wouldn't take that for an answer though. I told her no, I'm OK, don't worry about it no less than 20 times. It got to the point that I had to ignore her basically. And stare at my wife without making eye contact, repeating "no, I have lost my appetite, I will be fine, I don't want anything cooked fresh." Finally, she left.
A side note: She made some excuse that it's hard to keep food fresh during the badgering. I've been to several buffets. I don't expect everything to be fresh. Get real. But this made me feel a bit astounded. This is why I chose to write a review in light of so many other less negative reviews. The food was far beyond "not fresh." And her insistence clued me in that she knew the food was terrible and probably a health violation. She knew! Shame! Never was a discount, or a refund offered. And I didn't ask for one because I didn't want to be seen as trying to take advantage of anyone. That's just me.
Alas, I waited for my wife to finish, who shared my sentiment. But attests that the egg drop soup was passable. The crab Rangoon was expired (tried to rip one apart and it was as stale as a box of fiber one cereal.)
She quickly finished and we were out.
Don't go here....
Read moreFor the people who complain about paying before you eat: this man has bills to pay and when 30 plus people run out without paying, it takes away from his ability to pay his staff, perform maintenance and upkeep and keep his doors open. Most restaurants are pay before you eat, so please stop posting self entitled idiotic comments intending to ruin this man’s business and reputation.
For the intelligent few: I come here about once a week for 3-3.5 plates of food for about $20. At $6 a full plate and unlimited soft drink (Dr. Pepper, of course) that’s a great deal given the economy we are currently in. The man watches his customers for wastefulness because he cares. How many restaurants can say that they actively watch their wastefulness or care for that matter? It’s got a casual feel to the place. There’s no dress code, no formal attire required, and no reservations needed. The staff are family or close enough to it. How many owners sit down and eat with their staff much less work beside them? I don’t keep coming back because he has the largest buffet selection in the state, because he doesn’t. I don’t keep coming back because I can always find an empty spot for myself to sit, watch a few anime shows and get stuffed. That’s my normal routine. I come back again and again to support a small business man trying to put food on the table while creating a wonderful atmosphere for both his customers and...
Read moreBrought my family and I to great wolf lodge for my youngest son's birthday. His favorite food is Chinese buffet, this place was the closest buffet to our hotel for him. My wife, middle aged son and I tried a bite of the food and refused to eat it for the sole fact it was literally cold, not warm, not hot, but cold, stell, disgusting honestly so I asked to pay for my son's meal and explained the rest of the family didn't eat. They demanded I pay for our family that didn't eat. Pulled up a video of another family eating and said it was our family! I have 3 boys and they played a video of a family with 1 lil girl eating and said it was my family. I said I'd gladly pay for the food that my son ate and the two two drinks my kids got. Instead they called police , so I made a video of the interaction! 8/26/24 Update for everyone case was dismissed and Officer ZANE ZAGGER Z of the kansas city Kansas police department was turned into by me to internal affairs for violating there rules and regulations upon my family and I, it was confirmed by there captain in a letter to me after the investigation that the officer did indeed violate there rules and conduct. I'm now in the process of attempting to file a civil suit against the kansas city police department as they won't provide the officers body came footage after the prosecuters/DA watched it and decided to dismiss the case instead when I wanted it to...
