Los Hornos KC has a very limited menu. The prices are astronomical for what you get. When we visited, a new waitress was left to work by herself on a very busy day. The robot server gets lost and has to be followed around to make sure it goes to the correct table, at one point literally going to an unoccupied part of the restaurant thinking it was at the front of the table it was to serve, and customers have no idea that they are expected to get up and get their food off of the machines trays.
For two adults, we easily spent over $61.00 for two simple meals. One of which was a very dry milanesa (A Carrabo), The other was the steak Los Hornos which was literally half fat and gristle, half ribeye. The steak did have a good flavor, but I was confused as to why it was served with half of it being not edible.
More than one customer complained about the half jug of sangria not actually being a full half. I'm not sure if this was due to the type of container it was served in or what, but one customer was questioning it repeatedly because they were dissatisfied in the amount they received, again, because of the high prices.
We were served sample empanadas to try, we were not told what kind they were because the waitress honestly didn't know what was served to us, and one had peas in it which my wife is allergic to. She did point out to the waitress that she is allergic to peas and it would have been nice to know what was in the empanadas when they were served.
Overall, I'm not sure what the intended target customers are, but people need to be aware that this is a very pricey restaurant for what you get and how you are served. Unfortunately this was not a good experience for us at all
There is absolutely nothing about the food at Los Hornos KC that should cost two...
Read moreMy college roommate and I meet up for lunch every Friday at a different restaurant in the KC metro area - and yesterday's stellar choice was Los Hornos in Kansas City North. The warm welcome from co-owner Isolina de la Vega made the experience fun, entertaining and educational. I've had empanadas at other Central and South American restaurants - but this was a first for Argentinian. With 10 options for empanada fillings, you'll surely find a favorite. They cleverly emboss the empanada dough with a number that corresponds to the menu so you know which empanada filling you're about to encounter. Between us, we tried the Tucumana (named for the smallest Argentinian province where Isolina and her husband Dario are from), beef, chicken, sfija, chorizo and ham and cheese. All were great - but standouts were the Tucumana, the chicken and the sfija (Lebanese style with ground, beef, onion, warm Middle Eastern spices and a squeeze of lemon juice). In Argentina, menus show these as empanadas árabes. The delicious red chimichurri sauce was a great accompaniment to the empanadas. This was our first experience with chimichurri rojo which Isolina and Dario make with bright red Spanish paprika. For dessert, we tried the gorgeous "Maria Luisa" cake and the chocolina cake. Both were a great finish for our flavorful Northwest Argentinian lunch. The Maria Luisa cake actually looks more like Rogel Torta, a classic Argentinian layered cake with dulce de leche slathered onto thin layers of pastry topped with meringue. Our return trip, which will be soon, will be to try the Pork Milanesa Sandwich. Thanks again, Isolina, for your great food and...
Read moreWe tried this place for the first time tonight. Nice atmosphere. Clean.
Pros- not busy, didn’t have to wait a long time for food. Empanadas were good, but I haven’t had many in my lifetime so I don’t have much to compare them to. Our waiter, although new, was friendly and attentive.
Cons- we ordered a “Cuban mojito”. And what was brought to us was a bottle of Cayman Jack Cuban mojito. I could have gone next door to the liquor store and bought this myself for a lot cheaper! If I’m paying $7 for a drink, I’d like it to be original and made at the restaurant. Next, we ordered a provolone app and it was served with saltines. Please pick any other cracker besides saltines! We got the wrong empanada but that was fixed- they made me a new one quickly. We requested 2 sauces, chimichuri and Siracha. They brought us a red tomato based sauce (not chimichuri) and plain ol siracha that I have in my fridge. At that point in the meal, we didn’t bother asking to bring us the sauce that we ordered, and just carried on. The originality of some of their simple menu items is lacking. They have a great concept- serve a different type of food (other than Mexican)… don’t ruin it with boring American products! We will probably try this place again and get something different. However I do agree that it is a little pricey. In total, we had 6 empanadas, the cheese app, and 2 cayman Jack drinks…. That was $57...
