There was really nothing to like about this place- except maybe the “cozy environment” (seating, lighting).
Here’s the laundry list of terrible that occurred on our visit there tonight: Waitress immediately eye balled our 4 year old and you could see her tone change from “customer service” to “customer with potentially bothersome child”
Before we even asked for water, I asked if she could quickly put in Chicken Fried Rice for our son - she supposedly did but it came out like 15-20 mins later with our food - so it did not serve the purpose of placating our child while we were waiting
For the price the portions are teeny tiny - our $9 chicken fried rice had like 5 tiny scraps of chicken in it- our $21 Hibachi had about 3/4 cup of vegetables, 5 shrimp, 1/2 steak :(
Quality of food mediocre at best - our stir fried vegetables tasted like old fish - not tasted like the shrimp or the steak they shared the plate with- but fishy fish. Either they are not storing their food properly in the cooler and it was exposed to some fish or they use a really bad fish sauce
Waitress was cold in demeanor and not pleasant to interact with - you could tell she was walking back over to the sushi chef talking “trash” in another language and I observed her rolling her eyes after walking away from us more than once
Waitress forgot to put in our sushi roll order and never addressed the fact that it did not come out we decided to leave it alone because we did not want to spend any more money there
There is probably more I could list here but at this point I’m just tired of reliving the experience
I am a former server and bartender and tend to tip 20 percent even when things are not good giving the server the benefit of the doubt at all times - tonight I went against all my previous tipping behavior and only gave her five dollars on a $60 bill.
PS I’m definitely...
Read moreRecently moved to this area of KC from JoCo and found this place on the hunt for a new sushi spot. Really great local place for sushi! The appetizers are spot on. Tempura is light and fried just right. The gyoza is some of the best I've had around the metro area with a perfect dipping sauce. We've had several types of tuna and salmon sushi and all have been above average in both portion and quality. All of the rolls we've tried have been of great quality and flavor combos. My favorite so far is the Green Pieces Roll. With a side of jalapeno it's spot on. If you're familiar with Jun's you'll understand when I say this place is a suitable substitute in the Northland. Great job, Masabi!
**Update - 2 years later...my husband and I are so pleased that Masabi has been able to remain open during the pandemic. They are still making the best sushi north of the river and literally nothing on the menu has suffered for quality. This will be our go-to sushi for the foreseeable future. If you love sushi and haven't tried Masabi yet, I really encourage you to do so. I'm confident you'll...
Read moreIs there any very authentic sushi bars in KC? With very traditional items like live fresh uni, live octopus, fresh made wasabi root chutney, and otherwise very strange and very unique and other very non Americanized sushi/sashimi items? Im very bored with the ttypical crunchy tempura batter sweet teriyaki eel or spicy tuna rolls smothered in sauce. It's like in KC and other medium or small cities everybody has a very very narrow taste for sushi and the local sushi places obviously are just going to serve what people eat... Being from the San Francisco area, I grew up on traditional Japanese food among other cuisines and there's so so many sashimi and sushi items that I'm craving that I would be very surprised to find in KC but if anybody understands what I mean about very traditional and very unique sushi items, please do let me know because Google doesn't really give me much.. Online menus are limited and pictures are limited so I really don't wnt to visit every sushi bar to find the best if I can be pointed in the...
