Stayed one night in Kearney on the way to Colorado and I was craving a good cup of coffee. Lots of options, but a small local spot with 5 stars is always our go to and this place did not disappoint. My husband and I drink our coffee black, which means you know right away if it’s good or not when there’s nothing to mask the flavor. This was a delicious cup of coffee. Perhaps all the highly complementary reviews had my expectations too high. Maybe it was just an off day or a new barista. I’m not sure the cause but my latte wasn’t good for me. It was bitter, unfortunately a disappointment on my long drive. A large latte only has 2 shots here. Somehow my large oat milk latte with an extra shot came out to $8.50. The menu had the latte at $5.50, the extra shot .85c and the oat milk .85c, not sure how tax was $1.30. Price isn’t a big deal for excellent coffee. Unfortunately I didn’t receive excellent coffee. What a delight to find a high end quality coffee shop hidden around the corner in downtown Kearney! Coming from Seattle where competition for craft coffee is high, Penny Coffee blew me away! I ordered a cortado and was impressed with the velvet creaminess and flavor. Locally owned and operated by Tim and his wife, this hole in the wall is worth driving out of your way to enjoy.
