I went to dinner with my godfather here and the staff was delightful. Very friendly and told us the specials right off. I decided on ordering the beef stroganoff. I asked if it came with any sides or anything like bread etc. Server said no but it comes on pasta. Assuming ly it would be egg noodles. I ordered a side of asparagus as well. $38.00 beef stroganoff it came out on three tiny tiny scoops of mash potatoes not pasta. The gravy was very brown with mushrooms and streak of sour cream i guess. Stroganoff is a cream gravy. It is not suupose to be brown. The meat was the worst part it was goo. Like absolute goo. There was no meat texture left to the chunks. I mean mush mush goo. I've never had meat like that. It over all tasted like garbage. The asparagus was horrible. It was shriveled, petrified and burnt. I guess it was suppose to be roasted asparagus. Also garbage. I ordered a passionfruit martini and it was too strong. I like a strong wnough drink and all but it a as just too strong to enjoy. There was no salt and pepper at the table or any other thing. I had to ask for butter for the asparagus. I had to ask for sugar for my iced tea. Everytime I asked for something I got the feeling I was asking for the holy grail because I was looked at like I was crazy. They were still nice just seemed like no one ever asks for anything. We did not get dessert. I was still hungry but wanted nothing else from here. No I did not complain to anyone about this. I didn't want to spoil my date with my godfather. I should've ordered what he got. Which was the state street burger. It looked fantastic. And he seemed to enjoy it just fine. 38.00 for stroganoff 12.00 for asparagus side. Nope I won't go back there again. Unless my godfather wants to then maybe I'll get that burger but other than that ibwoilsn5 risk spending that kind of cash on...
Read moreI am always happy when a restaurant that I enjoy does well and is able to expand their capabilities. I had dined at Portobellos when they were located down the street in the smaller space. I was very excited when I heard they were going to move to a larger space just up the street. I am sorry to say that I think they made a mistake. While the space is larger, it is missing the intimacy of the other location. One of the features I liked best about the old location was the fact the kitchen was right they’re in the main room you see and smell your food being prepared. The kitchen is now hidden in the back now. There is a bar in the front with a large screen tv, not what I would have expected from this fine dining establishment. The night we were their they had a piano player and he was playing much to loud. Also, they are no longer a BYOB to the disappointment of some of our party who have very good wine cellars and liked to bring their own wine. That being said for the most part the food is still great. Are party had three appetizers which we have had before. The Calamari which was as good as ever, the portobello fries which I found to be a bit over fried (dark brown almost burnt) and the eskimo candy, one of our past favorites they seem to have changed it up and the portions of salmon were very small not a hit. The rest of our meals were very good and every bit of what we have come to expect from the folks at Portobellos. I have taken points off my review because of the change of venue. This is where I think Google should increase the rating system for restaurants to 1 thru 10. To me this place is better than a 4 but not a quite a 5 (I am hard pressed on this system to give 5's) on a 1 to 10 this...
Read moreSo first off, we weren't in the area to visit this restaurant. We happened to be at Longwood Gardens for the day, and had Googled restaurants in the area. Given that this particular place had a distinct menu that set it apart, we figured we'd give it a try. Best decision ever. The food was amazing, the owners were extremely personable and weren't afraid to get out and mingle and explain anything you needed, and made sure you were being completely cared for by the servers. One of our group had an extensive list of food allergies, and when we mentioned this to our host, she excused herself and immediately went to the kitchen, informed them of the allergies, and they adjusted their ingredients on the spot for him. Granted, these weren't the "life or death" type of allergies, just some incessant itching at most, but the fact that she recognized how impactful allergies can be and immediately moved to accomodate us puts this restaurant heads and tales above the chains and copycats. Of course the food was excellent, all the reviews on here will back me up on that, but the unique menu and entree combinations, the willingness to accomodate our needs, and one of the most detailed attentions to detail in how the food was presented has put this little restaurant square on our radar, and we aren't even from the area! Worth the drive, worth the price, and worth the time. Be sure to make a reservation since they have limited seating, BYOB, and don't expect to be in and out in 45 minutes because this isn't insta-food. It's...
