I would like to preface this review by saying that I've been into specialty coffee for over 10 years and have been a barista since 2015.
Philter just gets it right. The space is laid out well enough for there to be plenty of seating without feeling cramped. They're able to do this while having a large amount of retail space for clothing, brewing gear, bean to bar chocolates, coffee beans, etc. The flow inside is really nice and you can tell that a lot of thought was put into it. There is enough space between where you order and where you pick up that you don't have a huge crowd at the register (unless there's a long line to order) and it just works well.
The espresso is served on a platter with sparkling water and a spoon. This is a nice touch as I love to be able to cleanse my palate before sipping. The espresso was really well balanced and sweet. They're weighing their doses in/out every time, which, if you aren't familiar with specialty coffee, basically means that they are making sure they can produce the same result every single time. This is a really important step that I wish more cafes would utilize as it cuts down on guesswork and waste.
They use a Bonavita Immersion Drip for pour-overs which I'm a big fan of. I find that they have an excellent trade off of a little less clarity in the cup in exchange for a more consistently great cup of coffee. Once it's dialed in, you can get the same cup of coffee time and time again.
The food I ended up getting was really good. They have a system where you get a number after you order and they bring the food to you. It's pretty simple but it makes the experience more enjoyable.
I really can't say much more about this place other than if you want a good cup of coffee in the Philly area, don't miss out on Philter. They do a...
Read moreThis is a nice, quaint place. It has a cozy atmosphere, with a throw together style, which gives it an almost homely feel. The staff are nice and dressed in the very appropriate hipster garb.
My main dissatisfaction stems from the poor design choices. Such as the tables, which are seemingly made out of scrap wood screwed together, the problem with these tables is not the materials, but instead is the fashion in which they were assembled; leaving sixteenth inch spaces in-between the boards. Into these viods fell the crumbs of long forgotten meals, and were left festering in their solitude. It is more the byproduct of the lack of forethought, than negligence.
Another such flaw is the positioning of the door, which is situated in one of the main seating rooms. Every time the door is opened the poor souls sitting in said area are besieged by a rush of outside air (Which if I'm being honest threw off my vibe; Not groovy!).
All in all this is a good place to get in tune with your inner zen, update your blog, or simply enjoy the passage of time. For the food is good, the people are pleasant, and it's just a short Penny farthing ride from the...

Phenomenal; even their Eggs, Ham & Cheddar Breakfast Sandwich is the type of dish YOU WILL NEVER FIND ANYWHERE ELSE! I cannot express in typing the tone of my excitement, please take the text in Caps as me expressing to you how powerful my feelings towards this place is. A warm environment, beautiful interior, decorated with greens. In addition, THEY SELL MERCHANDISE AS WELL! It is Absolutely Humorous how one would Assume that the Eggs, Ham & Cheddar, sounds like a simple sandwich you can get at a Dinner. BUT THIS SANDWICH CAN NOT BE FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE! It is not a simple sandwich - it is soooo delicious; maybe its that sauce they put in there, but i digress. If you ever do get the sandwich mentioned above, GET IT IN SOUR DOUGH! I promise you, the sour dough bread only ADDS into the natural flavor of the sandwich. Great Staff as well. LOVE IT! Will definitely visit next time for another one of these breakfast sandwiches...
