A Quiet Night at Denny’s
The parking lot was covered in a thick layer of snow, tire tracks barely visible in the dim glow of the streetlights. The roads had been icy for miles, and after days of driving, I needed a break—somewhere warm, somewhere familiar. The bright yellow Denny’s sign stood out against the cold night like a beacon, promising exactly what I needed: hot coffee, good food, and a moment to breathe.
Inside, the restaurant was almost empty. No truckers hunched over their coffee, no late-night chatter filling the air. Just the hum of the heater and the soft clatter of dishes from the kitchen.
A waitress— a young kid in her twenties but with an old soul, and with a kind face—greeted me with a smile. “Find a seat, sweetheart,” she said, her voice warm and familiar, like something out of an old movie.
I slid into a booth by the window, watching the snow swirl under the streetlights. She set a steaming cup of coffee in front of me. “You look like you’ve been on the road a while,” she said.
“You could say that.” I wrapped my hands around the cup, letting the warmth sink in.
Ordering was easy. Eggs over easy, bacon, sausage, pancakes, hash browns. The kind of meal that fills you up and reminds you that life isn’t just about moving from one place to the next.
The food arrived quickly, and it was exactly what I expected in the best way possible. The eggs were perfectly runny, the bacon crisp, the sausage savory and rich. The pancakes were light and golden, soaking up just the right amount of syrup. The hash browns had that perfect balance—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. It was classic Denny’s, the kind of meal you can count on no matter where you are.
The waitress checked on me a couple of times, always with a warm smile, always calling me “sweetheart.” It wasn’t forced, just genuine kindness, the kind you don’t always find on the road.
I couldn’t figure out why the place was so empty. Maybe the weather had kept people in, or maybe it was just one of those quiet nights. Either way, I didn’t mind. For a little while, it felt like the world had slowed down, like I had found a small pocket of warmth in the middle of all the cold and distance.
By the time I stepped back into the night, the snow was still falling, the roads still slick with ice. But I felt better—full, rested, and ready...
Read moreWe had a table consisting of 4 adults and a child. In the time we spent here we had 3 servers, 1 of which put in our drink order then disappeared. Our second server, Tammy whom was the only one who gave good service, came to take our drink order just to learn we already put it in. She found our drinks and brought the manager with her to deliver them. She apologized and we were fine with it at the time. We then put in our food order with yet a different server. We each ordered a burger and fries. Not that difficult of an order. Only one person in our group ordered a build your own burger, WITHOUT cheese because they are lactose intolerant. Between our order and waiting between 40-45 minutes our server came by 1 time to refill 2 drinks, ignoring the coffee that was empty when we put in the food order. After the table next to us, who sat down and ordered after we did, got their food, ate, and left one member of our group went to ask where our food was. I wont even mention the groul of 6 adults who also sat down after us and got their food before us too. Shortly after the server brought our food and made a remark along the lines of "trust me I wish they were faster too because this is my last table". Thank you for making us feel rushed after waiting as long as we did for cold fries and a warmed burger. Our lactose intolerant member had to send her chicken burger back because of course there was cheese on it. That burger had to be sent back because again no cheese was ordered due to her being lactose intolerant. The coffee was finally refilled when the burger was taken back. Our server never came to check on us until she brought out the burger and checks. I've never been dissatisfied to the point of wanting to speak to a manager at a restaurant before but this time was ridiculous. Of course upon leaving the manager wasn't in sight. When the cashier asked how the food was we let her know that we weren't necessarily pleased yet they had nothing to say or an apology to give. We will not be returning to this location. So to our lousy server, thank you for ruining what should have been a nice outing because with a 2 year old we aren't all able to go sit down and eat often. Thank you for the rude remark that made us feel like we had to rush out of the restaurant. Thank you for the worst service any of us...
Read moreWhile our experience wasnt absolutely horrible I did witness people that had an unacceptable experience. When we pulled in I mentioned to my husband that I think I remember having a bad experience before and the lack of cars at 5:30 PM was a little concerning but we decided to give it a go. When we walked in there was food smooshed into the floor which was off putting but we decided to go ahead and still try it. We were seated within 3 minutes but kind of crazy since we were the only ones in line and there were 3 tables that were seated. When our drinks orders were taken our waitress was very slow. We are a family of 6 so theres a few of us but training waitstaff in short hand would have saved a little time. After sitting for 5 minutes I got up and got our menus since they were never offered. 5 minutes later when she came back with our drinks i told her i grabbed them and she told me she was planning to do that. No apology. Placing the order was a nightmare. As each person ordered she went and stood behind them to read off what they ordered off the menu. I know this isnt because she was new as she was the same waitress we had the last time we were there. It took probably 20 to 30 minutes for our food to come, which as a larger group I can kind of understand but we were the only order in the kitchen at that time. While waiting for our food I watched 2 customers come and be seated. 1 had their drink order taken and the other just seated. No menus and after 10 minutes both left. The whole time the manager is walking around the dining room complaining which was very unprofessional. When our food came it was ok. Very bland and presentation wasnt the best. Like I said our experience wasnt horrible but as a person who works in customer service if I was the manager of this restaurant I would be absolutely ashamed. When we went to pay a customer was yelling at another waitress for the wait and she came to us crying and apologizing. I felt awful for her but also understood where the customer was coming from. Took 10 minutes just to get someone to the counter to pay and it was the lovely manager who proceeded to complain about the 20 top that had just gotten seated. I will never...
