Mikado Sushi Restaurant — Restaurant in Grand Rapids

This is going to be a detailed review. My son loves sushi and ramen. So for his birthday we chose to take him. I googled and we ended up here. I have never felt more welcomed walking into a restaurant. The menu selection was insane. We couldn't make up our minds. The woman (assuming owner) brought us hot tea with the warmest smile. Upon ordering, I was having trouble picking a sushi roll. The chef (assuming another owner) told me he was going to make me one called a Golden Tiger consisting of everything I love. First out was miso soup and ginger salad. Our family has never had either, and we're pleasantly surprised. Delicious!! When our food came out we were blown away with how much food it was haha. They explained the best way to eat each thing. The food was literally THE BEST Japanese food we've ever had. From the sushi, to ramen, to our other entries. We had mentioned it was our son's birthday. The two (assumed) owners came over with fried ice cream, candles and a happy birthday sign. They sang to him and were so joyful and sincere. As lame as this sounds I had tears in my eyes. If you've ever been on the fence, go!! My husband and I said after leaving we felt like we were having dinner in their homes. Felt like literal guests. Best experience I've EVER had at a restaurant. We will be back....

Just left this restaurant which I used to love. My dining companion ordered the big shrimp roll and I ordered the soft shell crab roll along with a few other pieces of sushi. They said they put both rolls on one plate, but what they really did was put 2 big shrimp rolls on the same plate. When I asked about the soft shell crab roll they said they already gave it to us. By that time my companion had already eaten what they thought had been their order on the plate. We were not given the soft shell crab roll. No apology, just insistent that they had given us the soft shell crab roll. We know what the soft shell crab roll looks like and tastes like and we did not get one. I even told them I only got to eat 3 pieces of sushi and was still hungry. Very disappointed in the service and refusal to even attempt to rectify their mistake. PROS: Great friendly service(our server spoke Japanese and gave me a chance to practice).

CONS: The Sushi, The bathroom, the price.

I don't know if they were having an off night for sushi, but it was the worst sushi experience that I've had in Grand Rapids.

I don't know if this was true, but it seemed like every roll we had was not prepared fresh.

The yellowtail roll is made with ground up yellowtail. It looks like shark chum.

The California roll was pure mush. You couldn't taste the rice(very soggy).

The Mikado roll's friend shrimp was cold(making me think it was already made and sitting in the fridge)

And the Rainbow roll was also mushy.

You can tell a lot about a restaurant by the bathroom and this bathroom was NASTY.

I ordered a salad. Their version of a salad with Onion dress is lettuce with onion dressing on top. $3.00. Wow.
