When I arrived at Clark’s, a sign announced that I should seat myself, so I did a lap through the crowded restaurant only to discover that every table was either occupied by people or by the debris left by people who had finished eating and left. I returned to the entrance area to wait, and a server came up to me and suggested that I sit down anywhere I like. I politely said that all the tables that were open were covered in food. She said sweetly: “that’s OK. Just have a seat and we’ll get to it.” No thanks. I’m not sitting down at a table with half eaten food rotting in front of me while waiting for someone to come clean it up. So I waited. There were only two servers, and since the place was full, they were pretty overwhelmed. But eventually they cleared me a table. No worries.
I ordered the chopped plate and several sides.
BBQ: The barbecue was tender and juicy and had a nice flavor, but lacked smoke. I had been really been optimistic that it would be smoky, because hickory smoke was heavy in the parking lot. But it wasn’t in the bbq.
Sides: The potato salad was very good, with nicely textured potatoes, and the correct amount of relish and onion for crunch. The bbq slaw was too acidic, and the coleslaw was bland. Stewed cabbage was literally just steamed cabbage and was incredibly plain. Hush puppies had a lovely flavor, but were a little greasy on the exterior. Sweet tea was decidedly average.
Servers were nice but were unable to be properly attentive because they were too busy.
Price was a little high.
This is just another clone of so many North Carolina barbecue joints that I have been to. Packing in the locals for...
Read moreIf you are looking for the best BBQ in Kernersville then look no further. This is it. They smoke their Q right here in house. That is obvious in the taste, as it has a nice smoky flavor, tender and just delicious. I have been eating here for years, and the service is always up and down. Some days good, some days not so good. AT times they offer breakfast, then it is gone, only to come back later. Same for curb service. It was good while it lasted, now it's gone again. Inside the restaurant it is definitely showing it's age. The parking lot is gravel and the entrance has a steep drop off. Not exactly easy to get into and out of. The menu is large with plenty of options and something for everybody. The Q is very good. Hush puppies are amazing. Hot dogs are solid and they even have a foot long on the menu, which is always cool to see. The cheeseburger steak sandwich is amazing, and always cooked to order. My new favorite is the chuckwagon steak. This is one of the only places I know of to get one, and it is a real taste of the 1970's!! Portion sizes are large and you will not leave hungry. Over all very good. Just needs to be more consistent and cleaned up a little. Oh, and pave the...
Read moreLearned what 'Lexington bbq' is firsthand. It was tasty. We were on a 7 hour drive and questioned whether to stop for a sit down meal. Clark's was very quick, starting with getting our order. Food was out very quickly, checkout was quickntoo.
The slaw is interesting...a ketchup base. So my son was in heaven with it. The rest of us added bbq sauce and it was perfectly acceptable, lol! The hushpuppies look like onion rings. They were good. I prefer my hushpuppies sweet, these were not...however, they were also not that annoying spice flavor or whatever you sometimes get with bbq.
The meat was very tender. The portions were good sized. Oh, and they had Cheerwine, which in VA we have been unable to find since covid.
Our waitress (pictured in pink shirt w/her permission) was very nice and answered all our questions and gave suggestions (and refilled our Cheerwines). Definitely worth a stop next time driving...
