Prissy Pollyâs is cute and homey with a lot of wood interior, and is heavily decorated with southern sentimentality (please see additional note at the end of this review).
You order at the counter. They had a couple of sample plates on display, and the food looked delicious!
The young lady at the counter was patient, kind, and helpful. I ordered a large array of things. The price was very reasonable.
So much potential here!
Will the food live up to my expectations?
No.
Letâs break it down:
BBQ (Lexington style): I liked it ok. No smoke. Had more sauce in it than any Lexington style Iâve had heretofore. One recent reviewer said this is because âthey donât know what Lexington style BBQ isâ. I donât know WHAT to make of it.
BBQ (eastern style): tasted like unseasoned broiled pork doused with vinegar
Collards: the most bitter I ever et. Devoid of seasoning. Good collards need to be cooked in a smoked meat for fat and flavor. There was none.
Baked beans: not bad. About average.
Sweet slaw: bland and uninspired.
BBQ slaw: the most tame Iâve ever had.
Hushpuppies: competent. They were in rings and were good.
Potato salad: taste was actually good, but the gloppy, sticky, tacky texture nearly induced a gag reflex. No food should have this texture. Certainly I canât think of one. The only thing I ever ate that comes close to that texture is that time in kindergarten when Kenny Alexandrow and I dared each other to eat paste. We did. Another time was when my orthodontist, Dr. Marks, smeared plaster on the roof of my mouth to get a mold of my orthodontic anomalies. It, too, had a similar texture to whatever was going on with that potato salad. I didnât eat the plaster, by the way.
The coup de grâce that makes PPâs a two star rating is the filthy knife I was given. See photo. This is inexcusable.
One additional note: PPâs is heavily adorned with decorative signs that are unabashedly southern and noticeably conservative. While not overtly political in any way, the signs make it clear that this establishment has some opinions typically associated with right wing ideology. If you are an uber-liberal, you may be put out by some of the signage. Just...
Read moreWe made a point of going to Prissy Pollyâs tonight to hear the Tar Heel Travelerâs. Weâve gone to listen to them each time theyâve played there for the past couple of years. Tonight we went in, got the last table and then we were rudely told to move as that table was reserved for someone else. All the times weâve come to listen to the music, we have sat down at a table and then one of us goes and orders food. Weâve never been asked to give up our table and wait for one to become available. The owner(?)/manager(?) told us we were supposed to see him about a table when we got there. No where was this posted for us to see when we came in. There was no one standing at the door telling us this. It caught us completely off guard. How is anyone supposed to know this if it isnât mentioned anywhere and the fella who says heâs in charge is nowhere to be found? I asked him when they started doing this and he could not or would not give me a straight answer. As much as we looked forward to the music, we left and we will not be back.
The food is hit or miss. Sometimes itâs good, other times sub-par. My husband ordered Brunswick Stew on one occasion and it was sour. He called and they told him to bring it back and they would replace it. Sure! With more soured stew! Two wasted trips from Winston-Salem! Their bbq isnât worth wasting your money on. Go to Clarkâs right down the road if youâre looking for good bbq. We wonât be going back to Prissy Pollyâs, they are a âmissâ on our âhit or missâ list of restaurants. Oh, and we had a fantastic dinner at Clarkâs!
One more thing, pretty sure they were over capacity. Kernersville Fire Department should keep an eye on them. Very unsafe conditions, just a tragedy waiting to happen and the foodâs a big enough tragedy already. ...
Read moreWe just spent over $80 in this establishment, and the food was not appealing or up to par, at all. Itâs been a while since weâve eaten here and wanted to take my Son out for food to a place heâs never been (he lives in New Orleans), and I donât think we will be back here for a very long time. The food that we remembered getting from this place wasnât even close to how it was today. The mac n cheese bites were either severely over cooked, or the oil needed to be changed a few weeks ago bc the bites, hush puppies, and onions were not edible at all, and there was so much grease at the bottoms of our plates it just made the fried food soggy. The only thing good was the Eastern BBQ plate and sandwich, and the banana pudding. The Mac bites, onion rings, new quesadillas and hushpuppies you simply couldnât eat them. The sides of regular Mac and cheese were just okâŚ..not sure what happened to this place, but itâs not anywhere close to what it use to be. Me and my wife are both GMâs of Corporate restaurants, and would have never sent out friend food that looked or was cooked like that. We arenât trying to get anything free, nor do we want it from here. Just thought that whoever is running shifts as a MoD, KM, or owned it should keep a better look on how the food leaves the kitchen. The only outstanding part about this experience was the sweet young lady that took our order and cared for us while we were eating. Super friendly and enthusiastic, knew the menu very well, and also tried to recommend things to my son thatâs never been...
