I had such a wonderful dining experience at The Flour Box Tea Room, back in June. I made reservations in advance for a full tea service for two. When arrived there were quite a few people but we were still able to get a parking space in the designated lot. We were seated right away and not long after our server arrived. She had such a genuinely welcoming, warm, and friendly demeanor. Since we had never had a full tea service before she was incredibly patient while we made our drink choices and helpful answering a few questions that we had. We did not have hot tea, and opted for iced beverages. I had the green sunburst tea that came with syrup for sweetening so you add as little or as much as you'd like. My boyfriend had the rose lemonade, which I had a couple sips of. Without trying to sound like I'm embellishing here, it was by far one of the most magical and unique flavors I have ever tried. Our server brought out the tiered plates for the tea service and gave us a quick but informative rundown on what everything was. The bottom tier was a chicken salad on a croissant, egg salad on toast with chilled asparagus, and a phyllo cup with cheese. All were delicious but the egg salad was hands down my favorite. It was light and almost had a slight whipped/fluffy texture, and the chilled asparagus was a perfect accompaniment. I loved the phyllo cup too, it was crunchy on the outside with perfectly warm and delicious cheese inside. We had the freshly baked scones next, that came with jam and clotted cream. The server had previously explained to us that the clotted cream is essentially like butter, so we learned something new! We had both had one sweet and savory scone. They had just a bit of a crunch on the outside and were soft on the inside. The final tier was sweet items! Lemon mousse with raspberry, a mini tart, and a palmier. The mousse was delicious and was probably my favorite of the three. I also enjoyed the very light but crispy texture of the palmier. All of the food we had was absolutely delicious. I would love to get my hands on some of that egg salad though! Crossing my fingers that maybe it will be sold it separately someday to take home. I had some initial skepticism coming in that I would be full after the tea service, since we were coming in at lunch time. But that was actually quite a bit of food, more than enough! The atmosphere contributed a lot to the wonderful experience as well! Our server was outstanding and really went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. I really can't wait to return, have the tea service again, and try some of the regular menu items.

We've been big fans of The Flour Box since we moved to Winston-Salem, from New York, five years ago. With COVID-19 making a huge impact on how we eat out, a review seemed overdo. It always seems like there's an abundance of coffee shops, but seldom do you run into fantastic tea shops. Finding the Flour Box in a quaint little corner of Old Salem felt like my own little heaven on earth. The atmosphere was cozy, tucked away, and quiet. The menu offered quality assortments of food, intentional about sourcing local ingredients. Best of all, it went well with tea! Black tea, green tea, caffeinated, decaffeinated they broke out it out! The varieties of tea span from several countries across the world and it always felt like I could come back and try something new. They've since moved to the Henry F. Shaffner House downtown, which feels like an appropriately fancy upgrade to compliment the experience of tea time. As far as COVID-19 goes, dining inside is a personal choice. I've struggled with it, as someone who loves to eat out, but also wants to comply with safety guidelines. This is the only place in town I still frequent considering. With a one year old in tow now, I have always felt the staff was incredibly kind, giving her the same level of hospitality we've always been shown. They have also been considerate of safety and kept us separated from other groups by putting us in entirely separate rooms. Always masked and trying to keep their distance wherever they could, they're a great group of folks who have adapted well to a rough year. Highly recommend it!

My daughter made a reservation to have a “Big Sister” celebration in mid August. Before I get to the crux of the matter, I must say our server was top notch, and we certainly tipped for her amazing service. My daughter originally made a tea reservation for 3 adults and 1 child; and within minutes changed that to 2 adults and child. The change was acknowledged but the deposit reflected the original ask of 3 adults and 1 child. So we 8 gathered into a welcoming space, and placed our order. Two people chose not to order because the menu was so limited. We enjoyed our tea, lunch and appetizers, without being hurried. When it came time to pay the bill, the entire deposit had not been properly applied to the bill because we were charged a deposit for 3 adult teas (remember we quickly changed our mind making the original reservation, which was acknowledged by the owner. The owner then charged a higher tea reservation deposit which was not credited correctly to our bill). And it went downhill from there paying our bill. The owner was upset that not everyone in our party ordered. She was offended when asked to apply the full deposit to our bill, and asked us not to return. No problem. Which is a shame, because the tea itself was incomparable. The tea sandwiches/desserts etc. were average. And I’m posting because I paid half of this almost $200 celebration.
