It is unfortunate that Kingman doesn't have a well-rounded collection of classic style diners to choose from. The lack of such friendly competition has a diminishing effect on people's expectations, causing them to leave positive ratings that do not match the establishment. The Rainbow Diner is an excellent example of over rating of a place just because its not the worse. It is not only old, it looks old, but not in a good way. It's ugliness has been covered in layers upon layers of paint over the years. It looks like a converted 100 year old one room school house, painted yearly for asthetics. The prices may be good to some folks, I disagree. The prices are almost on the level of a breakfast/lunch only counter style diner you might find in New York or Chicago, they don't match this building, menu, or neighborhood. The wait staff is very experienced and if you aren't getting good service, it is on purpose. These are lifer waitresses, you can see it in their tired eyes, and feel it in their forced smiles when they can muster a grin. The tables are covered in horrid cheap plastic table clothes, hiding an even worse eyesore, but they are clean enough. Many utilizing used napkins to attempt to balance them and keep them from rocking uncontrollably. If only the window treatments could compliment them, or anything for that matter...ugh. The bathroom is identical to the bathroom found in any run-down convenience store, minus the graffiti and condom machine, but it is clean enough. The coffee is not "great" as others have noted. It is food-service company coffee just like you find in any truckstop anywhere. It is flavorless and weak, but it is hot. The breakfast fare is typical, with typical choices. The eggs are of the medium sized variety, not your usual large, cheaper of course. This is not really noticeable on the smaller plates. The breakfast gravy is made daily I'm told, but not every day. For lunch I found the food to be ordinary as well, only strangely off in a couple of ways. The taste was that of Thursday night leftovers and the fries made me feel slightly ill as I was eating them. I found out later that everything that is able to be pre-made and frozen. IS pre-made and frozen. This includes the steak served with the steak and eggs, which was priced high enough it should be a petite rib-eye, it is described nicely on the menu, but it is frozen, thawed in the microwave, and then finished on the flat-top with its tell-tale brown edges only a microwave does to a piece of meat. I should mention the steaks are carved by hand. This sounds nice, except it is carved from roasts purchased from the local grocery store a couple times a year, when on sale. Yep, the same with the hot turkey sandwiches, the turkey is oven-roasted alright, which is done once a year when the turkey goes on sale around thanksgiving....then frozen, nuked and covered in probably frozen portions of gravy. Also to my chagrin, the source of my stomach-refusing french fry dilemma was the "oil" they were cooked in. It is lard, rendered animal fat. I don't even know it that is legal without a posting somewhere. I hope they don't cater to vegetarians. On Sunday I'm told they only serve Mexican food all day. If it is like the rest of the Mexican restaurants in Kingman, I wouldn't hope or expect too much though I have heard kudos and praise from everyone who partakes. I imagine much of it is frozen as well. It is the best way to cut costs, and customers. I leave my review with one last tidbit. While on his break the ginormous cook was called to the kitchen to retrieve a forgotten item, someones toast. He did this in about 10 seconds flat, fast for a big guy. But a bit too fast to have practiced safe hand washing, or any hand washing. I haven't visited this establishment in over 2 years and have reviewed it honestly based on my experience and gained knowledge. I've done so because I felt the reviews to be astronomically high, thus needing the inclusion of my personal input....
Read moreThis place is no Grandpas Kitchen. Absolutely the worst breakfast I've had in years. I ordered the country fried steak, hash browns and sourdough toast. It came out fast from the kitchen. Hash browns looked and tasted like raw sloppy potatoes covered in oil. The country fried steak was barely warm and the breading was not cooked. The bread was not toasted just warm and smothered in butter. I've eaten here in the past and was never impressed but I thought I'd give it another chance. Just stay away. Fifteen bucks including coffee. Grandpa's Kitchen which is just down the street blows this place away. I really don't understand why anyone would eat breakfast here. Terrible in every aspect of...
Read moreEvery day at Rainbow is a special day, but if you are in the Kingman area before 2 pm on Sundays, you have to come try the Mexican food. I ordered the chile relleno with beans. First they brought us the salsa and chips. The salsa is homemade and tasty, all though I would have liked a little more heat. The chili relleno was wonderful. The beans... yummy. Howard had the chili Verde chimichanga. It was delicious. Howard had the rice and he loved it. We come here often for breakfast and I love their chili. They are open for breakfast and lunch only. Be there are be square. One of Kingman AZ...
