Driving from sunny Spokane to rainy, dreary Seattle, I arrived two hours early. I googled a coffee shop close by. The urban COFFEE lounge popped up, eight minutes away from my destination in Kirkland, WA. Drove there, but got sidetracked taking some short videos of some windsurfers on the shore of Lake Washington. No serious rain, just drizzle, but I didn't want to grow gills, and I heard "urban COFFEE lounge" calling. The word "COFFEE" is in caps for a reason. Coffee does call a person out of the rain into the quiet of a coffee shop with mellow background music. No traffic noise, just the soft whirr of coffee machines answering the call of desperate people calmly asking for a mocha or latte or whatever helps them make it through the rest of the day. Laptops and iPhones silently communicating with the world outside the windows, with the three personnel, who are there all the time, coming into a customer's consciousness when they want to order something. The highlight: a father bringing in his laughing daughter (4 years old?) to buy her a pastry and himself a coffee. In her rain boots, she had to stand on her tiptoes on the counter ledge to see the people preparing their order. When she received her pastry, she went through the shop until she finally turned around and called to her dad, "I found our table.!" Precious. Five stars. retreating...
Read moreUrban Coffee lounge has all of the ingredients to be a "cool" local coffee shop in the center of a captive audience of apartment dwellings. On first sight it has the "right" snacks, the fire, the lounge chairs, the outside patio etc. Disappointingly though, they just cant get their service act together at all. I was turned off and reverted to Starbucks right across the street about 6 months ago when one of the barristers got agitated with me for asking for a cardboard cup insulator as they don't have them in the self service area. It was like a load of trouble for him - his behavior was "precious." My wife decided to give them another try yesterday. I waited in the car parked outside for 25 mins, then joined her to see what was going on. Yes, 25 mins wait and she still did not have our coffee's. She is a shy person and had not said anything. Eventually the coffees came after I arrived. I asked what the heck was going on. I literally got a grunt. No apologies, no reasons given, and then the coffee while expensive was distinctly average. Starbucks across the road is staffed by a friendly bunch of young people who know how to look after a daily customer, never any issues, pretentiousness or attitude, just great service and no...
