I tried La Mesa Pizza Works today and I'm really happy that I did. After I placed my order online, I received an email from the Slice app saying that it was going to take longer than expected, but I gave them a call shortly before I was planning to pick it up, and they said that it was already ready - not sure why the app was wrong.
I eat meat, so I was thinking their pizza might be bland without it, but I decided to try the Rosemary Potato Pizza and garlic fries with ranch, and it was great! The pizza dough reminded me of focaccia and its not too doughy or thick, it was light and tasty. The seasoning was perfect, not too much, not too little. All the flavors went well together, the fries were fresh, not limp or greasy, and I could taste the truffle and parmesan.... perfect with ranch! Honestly, I didnt miss the meat - there was no need to bring in another flavor because it was so balanced and flavorful as it was! I will definitely order this again, and Im looking forward to trying more from their menu.
At night, it's hard to tell whether or not they are open because there is usually a van parked out front which belongs to a neighboring tenant in the shopping center, and it blocks your view of the windows, making it hard to see their lights at night. Don't let that stop you. Swing by and try them out! Be aware that they observe the Sabbath on Saturday, so check their...
Read moreLa Mesa Pizzaworks is the new kid in town. Not only that, but they are also a Kosher supervised by the San Diego VAAD.
I didn't get a whole pie, but some slices to try a variety. I tried the margharita, the BBQ, the "I can't not believe it is pepperoni" slice. All the slices were great. I was particularly fond of the BBQ sauce on one of the slices. I learned it is a house made kosher sauce, and it's delicious! It's definitely a keeper.
The plant based pepperoni was great, too. It is a little on the think side, but that promotes a good chew. Its flavor was spot on, and their mind and palate registered pepperoni indeed. The Margharita slice was good, too. The sauce was tasty, and the basil was fresh.
The crust on all their pizzas is slightly bready and could use a little chew, in my opinion. It is a very good house made kosher crust.
They offer a good amount of inside seating. The menu consists of pizzas, leafless salads, appetizers, soups, pastas, and my favorite: calzones, which I look forward to trying on my next visit. The service was...
Read moreMy wife and I had been meaning to try this place for awhile, since it's practically across the street from our place. Our litmus test for any pizza place is a classic pepperoni. Now I admit it's my fault for not even looking at the menu, BUT - the guy who took our order who even asked us if we had ever eaten there before only mentioned the pepperoni was soy-based until after we had completed the transaction. So, we're in that sort of awkward spot where we figured there is a good chance that we weren't going to like what we just ordered - but we also didn't want to have a totally closed mind to it. So we didn't say anything and took it home. If I had one word to describe their soy based pepperoni, I would use the word "vile." It truly was awful, both in taste and smell. We picked it all off and were able to eat the pizza just cheese, but that lingering soy-pepperoni taste was...
