Plenty of parking, ambiance of a country house is great. Interior design is very well done. The food...is disappointing. I had a Chicken Cali. Crepe. Upon plate being put on the table, I was very curious about the crepe dough, tore off a small piece, and first impression was a lack of flavor and doughy in texture. Thicker than I thought it should have been. Cutting into the crepe itself, it was kinda tough to cut through using a normal table knife. Overall taste, that lack of flavor prevailed, with the doughyness only made worse. The chicken was bland, without any seasoning, almost as if it came straight from a can. The tomato bits and grated Swiss cheese bits, although present, didn't contribute at all to the flavor profile with the only noticeable flavor strongly present was the chopped white onion. It was overpowering any minute contributions from other ingredients. I separated some of the grated Swiss cheese out for tasting. There was a slight hint of the characteristics of normal Swiss cheese, but it was more resemblance to that low-fat shredded cheese stuff you buy at a store. As I said, the single taste/texture that stood out was doughy onions. From other customers, their hamburger was overcooked, dry, with absolutely no seasonings. She did comment that she was starving and took another bite, but... Another customer stated that breakfast was absolutely first rate, even better than Marie's, another local restaurant that does breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Interesting, although they don't have Tabasco sauce... Speaking of which, this place does breakfast and lunch with hours being 0800 to 1400. They should maybe rethink that breakfast start time of 0800? That's on the late part of the day for me. But hey, good luck with that. Service is hit or miss. Seriously, hit or miss! The table next to me had a very pleasant, enthusiastic waitress who checked on her tables/customers 5 or 6 times conversing with them each time. For me, mine was more dour in attitude more given to single syllabic replies . I received the check only after I had already gotten up to leave. Hmmm š After being seated, the wait time for both initial service as well as food will also be very variable as witnessed by me (and commented on by other customers) . All in all, I had set my expectations, which was probably way too high, given the area. I say this as I had used as a comparison a crepe place over in Alexander, VA that had been sooo good. For LaPlata, MD, this is a daringly interesting endeavor. Maybe in a year, if they last that long, they will have fine-tuned their menu, staff, and kitchen preparations. Good luck to those who follow my visit. For me, it is most likely my last for at least another year. At...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreTucked away in what appears to be a quaint, residential-style building, this unassuming Maryland eatery delivers the kind of experience that food lovers dream of stumbling upon. It's the kind of place that doesn't need flashy signage or hype--it quietly earns its reputation one plate at a time.
Had we found it earlier in our trip, this spot would've easily become a go-to. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, a charming reflection of the comfort food it serves with surprising precision and heart.
My wife ordered the shrimp and Cajun grits, with a side of seasoned potatoes. The grits were, at long last, cooked properly--a rarity even in establishments that claim Southern inspiration. Creamy, well-textured, and infused with Cajun seasoning that had just the right amount of kick. The shrimp, lightly fried and delicately crisped, brought a satisfying contrast in texture. Together, the dish struck a perfect balance between richness and spice.
I opted for the salmon cakes, served with two eggs, creamy grits, and an English muffin. I added a side of a single pancake, and frankly, I wish I had ordered a stack. It was airy, moist, and subtly sweet--easily one of the best pancakes I've had in recent memory.
The salmon cakes were exceptional--beautifully seasoned and pan-seared to a golden finish. The interior remained moist without being mushy, a balance many attempt and few achieve. I nearly forgot the remoulade sauce it came with, which speaks volumes about the standalone flavor of the cakes. But when I did add a touch of the sauce and a squeeze of fresh lemon, the combination elevated the dish to something even more memorable. If you order this plate--and you should--do not skip the lemon and remoulade. Together, they create a bright, creamy, slightly tangy finish that ties the whole dish together brilliantly.
Service was equally impressive. Our waiter, Trevor, brought a genuine charm to the table--knowledgeable, attentive, and honest about the menu. A Texas native, he offered recommendations that felt personal rather than rehearsed. Ask for Trevor if you can; he's the kind of server who enhances the meal with his presence alone.
In short, this place is the epitome of a hidden gem--humble in appearance, bold in flavor, and run with evident pride. It's proof that some of the best food experiences come when you least expect them.
A return visit isn't a question of if, but when. And as always, enjoy...
Read moreWe came on a Sunday, so to be expected an extensive wait. Great that they have the text options. We were able to run a few quick errands while we waited. Service at table was pretty good. I would remind the servers, that glasses of waters are always brought to the table when alcohol is ordered. Not just the alcohol drink itself. The server was quick and checked on us often. She did however bring me my check before I requested it and did not remove the empty plates at the table after dropping off said check. Now, the food⦠we noticed not one person around us ordered crepes. I will note that they DO NOT hand spin their crepes. They use a crepe press. This makes a big difference on the consistency and flavor of the crepe. My wife had the Nutella one and had way too much Nutella in it. Crepes are designed to be light and flavorful not overbearing. I had the mexica crepe. The crepe was overdone and the top sauce took over the entire flavor. It said house made and it was very clearly Tapitio. The inside ingredients were minimal and the texture did not blend well. The bacon inside was burnt to a crisp and all others were soft. Imagine biting down on eggshell when eating scrambled eggs. Not pleasant. For the sausage they use prepackaged frozen sausage. Not good. For cheese, they use bagged shredded instead of fresh off the block. The anti caking agents in repacked cheese creates a problem with melting. The cheese in my crepe was no where near melted.
Recommendation: limit the menu to two or four hot and cold crepe dishes and capitalize efforts around those dishes.
Farmhouse restaurants create an atmosphere of āfarm to tableā. Unfortunately, this place did not do that.
We do recommend but make sure you are specific on the details of your order. They took a light delicate dish and āAmericanizedā it into massive unhealthy portions with no depth.
Hope this benefits the...
