Villa Cariño Mexican Food & Mariscos — Restaurant in La Puente

Found this little gem while going to another mexican restaurant that happened to be closed on Wednesday. There was another customer that was there to eat too. He sugggested this restaurant and mentioned the food was excellent. We took up on his suggestion and glad we did. I had the pozole and my wife had the steak picado. First. Salsa was really good. Thats a plus. The food came and my wifes plate looked delicious. The steak picado was very tender and had a lot of flavor. My bowl of pozole came and it smelled wonderful. Came with all the fixings. I had my choice of tostada shell or hand made flour or corn tortillas. Went with the flour tortillas. Excellent. Pozole had a lot of flavor and i actually finished the bowl. Juice and all. Love this place. Authentic flavors, portions are perfect and the service is personable and friendly. I have several dietary restrictions, including gluten, corn and dairy sensitivity. I also avoid most grains. I’m generally okay with mild cross contamination. With that said, there is a lot for me to choose from here. They always accommodate my requests for substitutions as well. I generally order chile verde, eggs with nopales, and various caldos, and substitute the rice for potatoes and ask for no cheese. I always forego the chips and tortillas, but the portions are enough that I am satisfied without them. I also avoid sugar and their cafe de holla is not sweetened so I can actually have it here! The food is comforting, love the house tortillas! When the food is good it keeps you coming back! I ordered the molcajete this time, if you never tried it this is a sign to order one . The hot stone dish is very satisfying and filling! It came with a small side of rice, fried beans, guac, and salad. Our server did not take note of our requests when we first set our order. Not the best service attitude but we did point it out and it was fixed. It seemed like an instance of when you order something specific, are ignored, and brought out whatever.
