I've made it a point to eat here the last 5 times I've been in town. I've probably been here 10-12 times. The staff has been friendly and the fare is quite good. This visit (August 2019), we were seated in the far row near the bank of windows both times we came for breakfast.
Both times the air conditioning was too high and their fans were going full blast. The "wind" was gusting so much, my empty Splenda wrappers were flying across the table! The first visit was on a weekday, so we were able to move to the back corner where there was not a fan directly overhead.
No such luck on the second visit, Saturday morning (8/3 our wedding anniversary). I was so cold that I had chills. I asked them to turn down the AC and the young man said it would be best if they turned off the ceiling fans. This did help for a short time, however someone turned them back on.
On our way out, I spoke to the general manager to tell him that I had been quite uncomfortable, with chills on my arms during my visit to his restaurant. He basically told me that the AC / fans system was either hot or cold and there was no way for him to turn up the temperature. I queried him, saying so you're telling me that if you have your thermostat set at 72 with your fans running, you can't turn it up to 73 or 74 and make it more comfortable? He replied that there was nothing he could do and that that is the only way that their system works. Firstly I don't believe this to be true. It doesn't track with how HVAC units function. I made the suggestion that perhaps they should rewire the fans so they can turn on half of them at a time. He did mention something about the afternoon being too warm if they didn't keep it cold all day. I don't believe it's right for a business where people sit still inside to keep it at an uncomfortable temperatures simply because the afternoon might get warm. This restaurant is only open until brunch is over. I believe it would be better for the people in the last hour or so of their open hours to be a little warm than for everyone to be cold the entire day. I don't know about you, but when I pack for a vacation in Palm Desert in August, I do not pack a jacket.
In the end, I expressed that I was disappointed. He showed no concern nor did he seem to care. I said okay then, I just won't eat here again; and turned to walk out. He yelled across the lobby well I don't want you to be here if you get so upset aboutjust being cold.
It was both rude and incredibly unprofessional of him to call across the large lobby at me like that. There were at least a dozen guests waiting to be seated. I can only hope they were smart enough to walk out. I do not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Good service starts with management and this general manager should be reprimanded for his behavior...
Read moreI ordered online Grub Hub. When I went to pick up my order. There was a young lady at the front counter/ register, and young African american man. The young lady asked me my name to pick up my order and what kind of milk I wanted for the coffees. I asked for coconut, the girl said we don't have that. I asked what they did have, she couldnt answer me, so the young African American ( noone was wearing name tags) said almond or oat. I chose almond. On the app i chose 2 hot pumpkin spice lattes, ( no option for milk)the order was already paid for. The young lady looked like a dear in headlights. She pulled out what i assume was my ticket and just left it on the counter and walked away. Then another man looked Hispanic mix. He walked up to me in such a rude way (in front of another customer that was waiting to be seated with his party of 15.) and addressed me as " Hey you lady, are waiting to sit? He didn't let me answer and grabbed the ticket on counter and proceeded to try to check me out, which didn't work. I was staring at him the whole time in disappointment of such treatment. I was truly offended and hurt. I slowly explained my situation but he was not really listening, he said oh ok just wait over there.I had to grab my order myself since it was just sitting on the table with other pick up orders. No monitoring of anything. (Free for all). The girl brought me my drinks which were cold i said to her that I ordered hot pumpkin lattes. That she had even asked me what type of milk I wanted. She walked away with the cold drinks.i see her tell the Hispanic looking man about drinks. I see him preparing 2 drinks with regular milk ( I cannot digest regular milk) I then walked up to the man and said" I hope you aren't making hat for me. The girl was standing next to him and they just started arguing with me like I did something wrong. I called the girl out and said " You even asked me what kind of milk I wanted?" She said I don't remember that. I look at the man and said I want to speak to the manager. He said I am the manager. I asked his name and he said Gerardo. I told him how this was the first time I had ever come here and that it was a horrid experience. Never ONCE did he show empathy, or say sorry. Nothing. He said listen I'm trying to help you. I'm shook my head in disappointment. Told him I would never be back. Patiently waited for my lattes with almond milk. He said " thank you". I walked out feeling like my morning had been ruined. The food was actually delicious. Such a shame.. Worst experience and personally insulted by the manager Gerardo. If you can't run a business properly it's never a customers fault. I will be consulting a lawyer about my rights in...
Read moreI love waking up late on Sundays and having a late breakfast with the fam - nothing better :) So, I called ahead and put my name down on the wait list - which I definitely recommend! The wait was 30-40 minutes, trust me you'll love not sitting there for that entire time! It was packed!!
We were seated on the patio and it was very pleasant! Interestingly enough, there were 7 open tables! 7! And the wait is 30-40 minutes? Ummmm okay. My party of 5 waited 15 minutes without anyone approaching as a server before I went to get someone just to get some drinks going. Who knows how long we would have waited. So bizarre. It gets better....after waiting and asking several times for a refill on my coffee, I finally helped myself. Other patrons followed suit. You could feel the frustration. You get the picture - the service sucked!
We were soooo hungry by the time our food came that - although it was basic - we devoured it swiftly. French toast and pancakes for the kids. Corned beef hash, runny scrambled eggs with hash browns for me. HA!
I've only been to the BYC in San Diego and was thrilled to hear they opened at this location. I was very disappointed this time around. I'll give it another try and maybe we will have better luck sitting indoors.
OH! That reminds me - I used a coupon from the back of a Ralph's receipt, which does not state any restrictions. WOW. First, I was told I couldn't use the coupon on weekends AND/OR during certain times during the week. WHAT?! Where does it state that,I ask. She doesn't have an answer and just matter-of-factly states that I should just KNOW that. Really? So....she went to ask the manager who ok'd the coupon. It was the most ridiculous fiasco! AUGH!
Let's recap: Call ahead if you don't like waiting Be prepared to take the initiative and get your own damn drinks!...
