Companion Bread is in an awesome location in the Heart of Clayton (which is the Heart of St. Louis.) Friendly corner cafe in the most walkable part of town. Companion is a good cafe. Too small, but good. Fresh breads and ingredients. Fast service and convenient-- especially if there is open street parking when you visit (rather busy M-F at Noon). Soups, salads and sandwiches are unique flavorful creations. .
Negatives: Tables are a too close together. Place is pretty small, maybe 1/3 the size of a typical St. Louis Bread Co. (Panera). Sandwiches were reasonable ($7), but total bill was $35. The chicken and turkey were fresh cut, howerver a very sparce amount, which meant having to leave some of the bread behind. This is a sandwich place for folks who feel the bread is the best part of the sandwhich for sure.
Big Fan of the location and the food. Hope they can find space to expand and get more comfortable seating. Add a gourmet coffee menu and some couches and this place could be packed. As of now, it's just a great corner deli with unique menu.
Check their hours as I recall they close early, odd hours.

Read moreFood was delicious, great price, and fast. You get there and the line is never-ending but it moves along fast. They have it run like a well oiled machine. By the time you get to the register your food is ready, hot/cold and fresh. I ordered the French dip, it didn't disappoint. There are lots of freshly made tuna salad, chicken salad, pies, pastries, specialty breads, etc..to check out along your journey in the line to the register. I did take a 1lb container of chicken salad and a loaf of baguette came with it, to go. It was good, but a bit expensive. Their huge apple pie was almost irresistible, but it didn't have a price on it, so I left it there. There were a few items that had no prices on them and after the cost of my chicken salad I know why. I will get that apple pie next time though, even if it cost a bit more than I think it should. The place is very nicely decorated, not alot of inside seating. There was outdoor seating with umbrellas to enjoy, even a smaller section for children. Very quaint place. I will...
Read moreLot is difficult. Narrow parking spots, narrow paths, not enough spots.
Room is packed. You are sitting almost on top of the next patron. During anything close to a busy time, there are no seats available. You will be waiting for someone to leave. Also, no way you will find seating for more that 2.
Food was pre-made. The sandwich I wanted was pulled out of the fridge already packaged in plastic wrap. What sandwich maker does that? And the sandwich was MEH at best. Small. Over-priced.
Service is quick to be done with you. I ordered a coffee. Once I paid and the coffee was started, no one gave me any attention. I watched my coffee sit there for five minutes while other guests were checked out. An employee only asked about it when another coffee was ordered.
The bagel I ordered (asiago) was as pale as the cream cheese I ordered. It is as of they never baked it. Isn't the store called...
