Honsan Sushi & Grill — Restaurant in Laguna Niguel

I want my review to literally reflect the 4.8 currently for this restaurant. The food is good, but with some reservations. First off, the sushi was fresh and tasty. My daughter loves sushi and they did not disappoint. I ordered the Bento box with the beef teriyaki upgrade. The teriyaki was fantastic, definitely home made and had superb flavor. The problem was the meat. It had the distinctive taste that it had been left to marinate in the blood of the meat. Understandable, while it didn't ruin the meal, the taste did give me pause. Everything else, the tempura, salad, and California rolls; were excellent. The service left me puzzled. The young lady at the counter was friendly and helpful. However, it would have been nice to know we could have ordered at our table instead of the counter. Minor quibbles aside, the food is great and the service was excellent. The food looks great, I got delivery through Uber eats and no chopsticks. Uber suggested calling the restaurant. When I called about this, they said they’re sorry but nothing they can do - there was an option to “add chopsticks” on Uber Eats. I didn’t see one. No big deal since the food looks great and I figured they’d offer a solution, but this rating is solely based on that ambivalence and customer service. I’ve never had this experience of missing chopsticks on a delivery, or any sushi order I can remember, which amazes me as I reflect on that. I’ve never eaten sushi without some ‘sticks but guess I could invest in a pair now, and there’s a first for everything, right?. Maybe sushi isn’t their main thing here, but the reviews sure were high. Make sure you request them to avoid this. Will adjust review if I hear anything further. Came here for dinner with my partner as we live nearby and wanted to try another sushi restaurant.

The service was amazing, our waiter was great and very responsive. And given the good reviews we were hopeful to have a new regular spot!

As soon as we tasted the Ikura nigiri, we literally had to spit it out. It tasted rancid. Okay, we thought, maybe just a fluke, things happen. Then we get the remainder of our rolls and all of the fish tasted quite off, with even a few slices having a bit of a grey color to them. It made for a super unpleasant experience, and we ended up not eating much of what we ordered, as we were worried about freshness.

I’m really hoping this was just a one-off thing given the other positive reviews, but...
