I got a big old sampler plate so that I could try a little bit of everything...
The ribs are big and meaty but a little fatty. (I think you get that with St Louis ribs. Baby backs are leaner but they have less meat.) The collard greens were tender and delicious. They could have used a bit more flavor... Maybe some bits of smoked meat and) or onion in them, or a little bit more vinegar in the pot... nothing a bottle of hot sauce didn't cure.
The shrimp were fantastic. They were breaded with cornmeal and it was a wonderful flavor and texture. The smoked chicken fell right off of the bone. I'm not sure what the rub was on that chicken meat, but I'm pretty sure the first two ingredients were "magic" and "love". Absolutely wonderful!
The french fries were okay, they were those battered type french fries and seemed like nothing too special.
The cornbread was tender and delicious and could have really been a dessert on its own it was so sweet. And then we get to the star of the show...
That may be the best cornmeal fried catfish I've ever had in my life. (And I used to work in a seafood restaurant that fried catfish all day.)
The atmosphere was pleasant, the bathroom floor was sticky under my shoes which was kind of gross, but hey, I don't eat off of the bathroom floor. The server was pleasant and attentive, and I'm not from around here so maybe this is just the way things are. But the prices seemed ridiculously low to me for the large quantity of food received. (Which is a great thing!)
The owner has a great story printed on the back of the menu worth a look.
All in all, a great experience. Low points were the fattiness of the ribs and the generic french fries.. high points were the chicken, and the INCREDIBLE shrimp and catfish! I'll be back next...
Read moreDecided to take a drive for some BBQ today. I typically try to stay within an hour of Columbus. So I had read a little about 2G's and made the drive out to Bellefontaine. Ordered the 4 rib special, it came with 2 sides. I ordered collard greens, mac n cheese and ordered additionally baked beans and cornbread. Also an iced tea. Bill came to 15 bucks. Pretty cheap for the amount of food. Now for the food. The ribs, because that is what it was all about. These ribs had a phenomenal bark on them. Most ribs our wet when you get them but these dry as can be and had such a great taste, inside they were super moist. The ribs are cooked with hickory and apple wood. You could definitely taste the smoky flavor. The bones just broke into pieces as I tore the meat off them. No utensils here, that's what your hands were made for. No sauce even needed. The greens had the slightest touch of vinegar that blended well with them. Mac n cheese was of the baked version with just a small bite from the cheese. Great consistency. Baked beans were okay but could have used a little kick to them. They were still okay, Cornbread had a sweet taste to it and was nice and moist. Put some butter and it melted perfectly. Talked with George the owner for just a minute, You could tell that he is married to the business. Some people are in it totally for the money and then there are those that it is there life. He has been doing it for 9 years now and has definitely perfected his craft. The restaurant has probably 12 tables in it. Plenty of room. The waitress was on it, she checked in a timely manner and had refills when needed. I will definitely be back. Great story on the back of the menu....
Read moreI'm kinda torn between 3 or 4 stars, it was really very good food and good service so we will probably be back but there were other things that would bring my rating down. The portions weren't real big, I would like to have the option to order half or full rack of ribs, not just 4 ribs, or half chicken, not just a leg quarter even if the prices went up a little. I do have to say the 4 ribs were definitely meatier than most places tho. 4 ribs and two sides was like $12, the chicken (leg quarter) meal was $8 something. They do need to increase the sides portions just a little, the pictures here are slightly deceptive from what we experienced. The mac n cheese and baked beans tasted great, I just wanted more. I tried my brothers sweet potato fries and they were good too. The giant shrimp arent so giant and they were cooked to death and tough, so at $1.75ea I won't be ordering those again. The ladies room was clean and for the sake of the diners right outside the mens room, I hope it was clean too. I know space is limited but I would suggest moving the cash register counter to the area close to the mens room instead of having people dine there, honestly nobody wants to eat right outside of a mens restroom. Regardless of it was clean or not, if we would have had to sit there, we would have got up and left. I heard a few people talking about it while visiting and it was also what the guys in our group talked about most after we left and the next day so just a hint. Anyway, our group had a good experience and the taste of the food will bring...
